Is a lie a lie

Is it even a lie if you don't know that what you're saying is actually a lie?

So, say a child goes to school after a Lapland trip and says they've seen Santa. Clearly they haven't, but is it still a lie if they believe they have and have been told they have?

No child was harmed in the making of this thread.

It's not a lie when someone genuinely believes it to be the truth, even if they are mistaken.

Lying is knowingly saying something false. Simply being wrong isn’t lying. Neither is being ignorant of the truth, otherwise half the world would be liars.

Some people are pathological liars... I'm not even sure they know they are lying.. It becomes 'their truth'...

If you have doubts, believe your inner voice... always

The hard cold truth is everybody lies and those that say they never do or they hate liars are fooling themselves. The answer is very simple do we mislead for the great of good or for the benefit of ourselves. Is omitting the truth lying in itself? We lie to our kids, we lie to our partners and even to our friends and work colleagues. Accepting that everybody does can be an epiphany. The context of the lie is what is important.

There’s a difference between lying and thinking something is true when it isn’t.

So every author is a liar?

Poets?

Artists?

Lies are deceitful.

Fantasy is a different animal

Just being mistaken or ignorant something else entirely.

The world isn’t neat and wrapped up in tight & wrong bows.

They have been lied to by the people they thought they could trust.

But they enjoyed themselves in the process so it's socially acceptable in this instance.

Ho ho ho Merry Christmas.

I guess it's down to where your ethical principles reside.

I lean more towards intention than consequence, and in this instance I think it's fairly reasonable to say the intention is a positive one. As far as mythological icons go, Santa is fairly harmless.
