In the past year the numbers of people turning to food banks through hunger and desperation has doubled to a third of a million. So much for the 'Big Society'.

One of my employees runs one as a volunteer two mornings a week locally to me.

He has told me many times that he is getting busier , people are losing jobs and just generally struggling, and they are short of food all the time.

Mostly it's women just been separated the husband earns all the money and he walked out , or single people kicked out of home , it could take upto 4 weeks for benefits to get sorted out , and these people really appreciate being able to get some free food.

It's not open to abuse , you can't do your weekly shopping there , in fact you are referred by social worker or cab , the bank keeps a record of how many times someone visits and I believe it's limited to 3 times a year , you don't get a load of stuff , just enough food to last each peson 4 days

If anyone goes shopping spend about £2.00 get a few cans and drop it into your local food bank , if you can't buy food just drop a couple of quid of in a envelope

It's only £2.00 and these people really need it.

Saw this on the beeb this morning DB9, I'm with you all the way. It's like we've stepped back 70 years. But it restores your faith in the human condition when you see so many people volunteering and donating. I guess that's the only positive that comes from this. It's inspired me this morning to do what we can. Thanks for highlighting x

From what I have been reading there are at least 3 per day opening in the UK.

We seem to be plunging back to the victorian age.

The govt spokesperson said that so many people putting excess food into the banks is a sign of how society is starting to look after itself and is a sign that the Cameron's big society is working.

Personally I think the government is looking to set society against itself by labelling those people who cannot get enough to pay for the necessities of life such as food; scroungers.

Forcing people to choose between heating and food whilst energy companies put up their prices and make even more profits whilst avoiding paying their fair share of taxes is nothing short of scandalous.

Don't you mean the communists the workers have no money or standing and the state owns everything and controls everything even out thoughts

Under Communism there's full employment, wages for all (OK, not a huge amount), controlled prices in shops and so on.

No state can control what people think.

I read a story about Henry ford some years back when he was negotiating with his workers for more pay.

He said to the workers representatives, "why should I pay you guys 20Cents more per hour when I have guys banging on the factory gates who are eating from soup kitchens and will work for 50Cents an hour less than you get now"

Mind you, He had a signed pic of Adolf hitler on his desk.

Todays labour market is the ideal scenario for todays bosses, "Be grateful for what you have otherwise if you complain I can make things worse for you" seems to be the way negotiations are conducted.

Food banks are not a throwback to the 1980s their roots go back to the early 1960s, that means this and the previous government has put the clock back nearly 50 years.

And yet the news this afternoon quoted one Tory as saying this was proof "Big Society" was working... yeah right - for them!

Through work we have just started a food bank slow at the moment been running 3 mths. Not sure if people are holding back or lack of publicity; working on the latter.

Someone once told me: you build it, they will come.

So we are waiting.

The 80's were good I remember it being a time of getting of your arse and making money

Just like today , if you work hard and gamble running your own business you stand a good chance of doing well.

I think the cost of living has risen exponentially and I can remember when 1k was a lot of money, now it's a gas and electri bill for a quarter

A woman I know works for a charity which runs a food bank. She told me that lots of their customers won't accept supermarket own brands and will only accept the top brands, eg Heinz Nescafe etc.

So much to the starving.

So what? OK I understand the term 'beggars can't be choosers' but then the fact that we HAVE beggars like this in a developed, apparently wealthy, country is what is MORE shocking. So, some people are arsey. Nothing new there - you will see than in every single walk of life. Doesn't mean a) they deserve nothing b) they aren't really in need c) all people who go to food banks are the same.
