Felt like crap all day and still feel grotty as hell now " I often ride to work on no food and just water (15 miles) and then have a snack after an hour or so of been at work. Fasted training I think is the name for it. My god it is good for keeping weight off but on the one occassion I thought I'd be ok having a tea before setting out, I blew horrendously and felt crap all day. | |||

You don't pay 'road tax' and no one has since 1937. VED is NOT a payment to use the road, it is a general tax on the damaging emissions from your vehicle and is part of the general tax take - it is NOT ring-fenced for highways maintainance, that is funded via Council Tax - that all working adults pay towards whether they drive or not. That VED disc on your windscreen does not confer any more 'right' to the road than any other user, be they cyclist/equestrian/pedestrian. I do wish people would learn about the subject before spouting off. Cyclists have every right to use the road, they are not a hindrance to traffic - they ARE traffic. | |||

"Here in Spain the motorists are alot more considerate than in the Uk , but the roads are quite dangerous Most of my cycling is done off road thats why for the past 2 months Ive been recoveing from a fractured knee cap from having a big off on the local downhill course.Ive just got back on the road bike in the last week and need to get some miles in , Mrs Mouse isnt too happy about me still having the downhill bike but we all love our little pleasures in life " Ive done two trips with Ciclo Montana down in the Alpujarras range, stunning scenery and some completely bonkers trails | |||

Most of the time they are an afterthought done on a fag packet by someone who has never ridden on city streets. They end up being pointless at best, and downright dangerous at worst. The ones that attempt to guide you onto a pavement for 100 yards (good idea to mix bikes and peds) then spits you back into the road just when the drivers aren't expecting you. | |||

In a town like Stevenage where they were built at the same time as many of the roads, run parallel to them, are plenty wide enough to drive a car down, seperate from both road and pavements and often on both sides of the road and mean you can travel the length of the town avoiding traffic and navigating junctions they are fantastic. But most places they are just a white line trying to force cyclists in to the gutter or a line splitting a pavement and they are neither particularly useful and far from safe. I was watching the Amstel Gold on Eurosport the other week and the facilities and infrastructure in Hollanmd were incredible. | |||

To surmise, you are wrong in your belief that your payment of VED grants you the right to use the road, as a motorist you are merely licensed to use the road and that license can be rescinded at any time. The Highway Code states that a cyclist must not ride two abreast on narrow or busy roads and any bends or corners it all so states that if you can't keep to the speed for the road and are holding up a line of traffic you must pull over at the next safest place and allow the queue to pass... | |||

The highway code says cyclists should (not must and should is a recomendation not a law) never ride more than 2 abreast and in certain road conditions it recomedns single file. The highway code make no suggestion that cyclists have no priority and should pull over to let other vehicles past. In fact quite the oppositte it encourages cyclists to assume the primary position as it is safer. Incidentally it does recomend that mororists give cyclists as much room as a car when overtaking. In the context of your original post about safe overtaking a quite pertinent point. I take it the highway code only applies when it (fictiously) suits your argument? | |||

I pay road tax so as I can drive my car on the highway if for instance I decided to roller skate up the middle of the road with my mates for fun an held you up and would not pull over you would be giving me a load and by the way a vehicle which can not keep too or near the speed limit and conditions of the road and is holding up faster moving traffic must pullover to keep the traffic moving it is an offence to go to slow as it is to go too fast .., You don't pay road tax... " So, having had your assertion that you pay for your 'right' to use the roads dismantled you are now moving the focus of your 'argument' to say that the HC says what you want it to say? Show me where the HC states that cyclists must move over, as i cannot find it. In fact, RULE 163 of the HC states that overtaking vehicles MUST give vulnerable road users the same amount of space as they would a small car. This in effect means that if you cannot pass safely then you cannot pass. As the overtaking vehicle the legal onus is on you to do so in a safe and controlled manner, not squeeze through a gap that is too small to do so in a safe manner. Cyclecraft, the Institute for Advanced Motorists and other road safety/roadcraft organisations all teach cyclists to use the Primary and Secondary Road Positions for safety. The Primary is the centre of the lane, and should be used when the cyclist feels that the lane is too narrow to allow a cycle and a vehicle side by side. This means a single carriageway where cars are parked alongside, traffic calming measures like traffic islands, blind corners and narrow lanes. The Secondary Position is in line with the near side wheels of a vehicle, this allows an overtake but still forces the following vehicle to do so correctly - with their offside wheels over the white line. There is even a picture in the HC showing how this must be done for the hard of understanding. What you call 'holding you up' is the cyclist controlling his enviroment for his own safety. You have no 'right' to pass, just as you have no 'right' to use the road in the first place. Any other difficult concepts i can help you with? | |||

"I know this will draw a bit of controversy but it is not aimed at people who cycle to work as they are usually alone and not aimed at city cyclists either but the club riders who every Thursday to Saturday morning where I live and work decide to pleasure ride a coastal route from 6.30 am in groups of 2 too 60 and sit in the middle of the road and hold up traffic and prevent motorists getting to and from work and parents doing the school run i have seen people coming to blows and very dangerous overtaking through pure frustration with these arrogant wana be tour riders what are your thoughts . The highway code says cyclists should (not must and should is a recomendation not a law) never ride more than 2 abreast and in certain road conditions it recomedns single file. The highway code make no suggestion that cyclists have no priority and should pull over to let other vehicles past. In fact quite the oppositte it encourages cyclists to assume the primary position as it is safer. Incidentally it does recomend that mororists give cyclists as much room as a car when overtaking. In the context of your original post about safe overtaking a quite pertinent point. I take it the highway code only applies when it (fictiously) suits your argument? THINK! advice for when you're driving1.Look out for cyclists, especially when turning - make eye contact if possible so they know you’ve seen them 2.Use your indicators - signal your intentions so that cyclists can react 3.Give cyclists space – at least half a car’s width.
