There's talk about increasing the number of cases heard without a jury. So.....who's done it ? What was your case ? What was the outcome ?

Did it at Isleworth in the spring of 1998. Three Indian gentleman from Southall beat the shit out of Turkish bloke with a wheelbrace, he'd been screwing one of the women in their circle.

All three guys had different stories, while the guy who was attacked had limited English so had to give his evidence via an interpreter.

We convicted two of then after about 15 minutes discussion. The third bloke wasn't as heavily involved, but after a couple of hours swung everyone round.

All got four years for GBH with intent.

I was a juror at a coroner's court. That was pretty fascinating and as I had medical knowledge from my time in the ambo service they made me the foreman. One case was pretty harrowing - involved someone being held on remand at one of the local prisons. It was clear the prison was trying to pin all the blame on a nurse which we saw through in no time at all. Was a narrative verdict and I took great pleasure reading out our findings and wiping the smirk off the prison's solicitor

Done it twice, drug smuggling first time, 3 morons got decent sentences, 2nd was a nightmare I'm not going too far into but we were gutted to have to go not guilty, due to lack of evidence, not a day I wish to ever have to repeat. I sincerely hope i don't get picked again.

It does concentrate the mind when you realise the full responsibility of the task in hand. I wouldn't want to do it again

Having done it twice I can see why in some cases the jury is absolved of any further service in future..

First case they had set up the screens and the thought that it was anything to do with kids was really concerning..

Having said that it's an important part of the system which should be maintained so if called again (I think the limit is three) would attend..

I did it at the beginning of the year. It was interesting because most of the people who were supposed to give evidence weren't able to because of their injuries. It was a fatal rta and we had to decide who had been driving from evidence provided by police etc.

Saw awful videos and pics. Both people in the car had been thrown out of the vehicle. 2 seconds before impact they were travelling at 120mph!

2 17 year olds on provisional licences and a car that wasn't theirs. Terrible.

Did a month at the old bailey. One big case that was arson and attempted murder. Two one day cases, assault and guy pulled gun on a copper.First one was a big case in the news

For all those who have responded to the OP with comments, why haven't you mentioned the cultural and racial backgrounds of the perpetrators (just like the OP)...?

Perhaps they were all Anglo-Saxon and or a lighter shade of pale? 🤷🏻

I did it this year. Sat on one trial for the whole two weeks. It is an experience I will never forget and one I do not want to repeat but that’s because it was not a pleasant case to sit through or have to make a decision about. Saying that though it was interesting to see how the legal system works.

With regards to my original post, anyone vaguely familiar with Southall in West London will be aware of the culture of the area and (I'm trying to put this delicately) how the various groups stick together. And it was also a fact that they guy who was attacked spoke next to no English. Made it a convoluted and complicated case to follow.

Done it earlier this year, case got adjourned after two days of hearing evidence so never got to see the case through, the guy, if guilty could have been looking at a life sentence so the responsibility was immense.

I would absolutely hate to do jury service. I feel neither qualified or knowledgeable enough in life to know whether a person would be guilty. I don't think I could ever be 100% sure unless a person did a full and detailed confession.

Imagine if you sent a guilty person to prison

I've done it. Case was a complete waste of time as there was absolutely no evidence against the guy other than he was known to the police.

I couldn't believe people wanted to find him guilty as, 'they wouldn't have brought the case if they didn't know he did it'.

Having to explain the concept of evidence to people was interesting. The case was dismissed as the jury couldn't reach a consensus. The judge had a lovely voice though. Could've listened to him all day.

I was called up but never sat on a case. Most of the people there definately did not want to be there. Me personally, I accepted it. Made me think is a jury best way to determine the outcome of a trial.
