Has anyone paid for cleaning services but been really disappointed with the outcome? Since I've been in hospital/more disabled than usual, Mr KC has been swamped with so much, that doing some of the household stuff has taken a backseat. So, in a kind of weird Christmas present before we go away, I thought I'd get someone in to clean.

They've not long since gone and there's so much that's not done or just sloppy. E.g. the rug by the kitchen door is still full of bits. I know it hoovers up completely fine. The shower cubicle still has soap scum/streaks and the shower tray doesn't seem to have been cleaned at all.

I've just cleaned the bathroom sink myself (a big challenge for me) and am contemplating the wisdom of trying to hoover.

The people had good reviews online and lots of pictures of lovely clean and tidy houses.

I won't be bothering again

Never hired a cleaner but I would be taking pictures of what has not been cleaned before cleaning it myself.

Do you pay for a set time or until the job is done?

Did you have a clear discussion with them beforehand about your expectations and requirements?

Wherever

I paid once for end of tenancy cleaning as it was a part of my tenancy agreement when I was moving out of my previous flat. Not only their job was absolutely horrendous, they also manage to throw away the property gas and electric meters keys and I needed to retrieve them from the outside bins in broad daylight.

Not sure what to say, as they have a 5 stars reviews as well. I put it down to me being rather a perfectionist but I still think about it till this day.

"Did you have a clear discussion with them beforehand about your expectations and requirements?"

We agreed they would clean all aspects of the bathroom (all surfaces, toilet, sink, shower, mirrors, tiles.

The kitchen - worktops, tiles/splashback, hob, sink, cupboard/drawer fronts.

Bedrooms - tidy, clean surfaces, mirrors, unit fronts.

Living space - clean surfaces, cupboard/display cabinet fronts and glass, general tidy.

Throughout the house - hard floors swept or hoovered and mopped. Carpets/rugs hoovered.

It didn't include windowsills, skirting boards or internal or external doors. I told them not to bother in my son's old room because it's currently in flux between uses and stuff everywhere so it involved cleaning 2/3 bedrooms, one fairly small plus the open plan living space, kitchen, bathroom and conservatory.

I've only spoken to one person who was happy with the cleaning service they used. The problem is that you're expecting someone to clean to your standards when they clean to theirs.

My dad's cleaner is worse than useless but my mum employed her let her get away with murder and she's just got worse.

I know of one woman who runs a cleaning company and I'd employ her any day of the week because she's very thorough, too far away from you sadly

Yeah, I learned my lesson. We shall live in dust a bit more.

I tried to clean some of the bathroom stuff using my teacher/litter picker thing but......nah

I'll give the hoover a go after I've recovered

Did you use a cleaning company, or an individual? We found that a company may charge a bit more, but we have much better come-back from the company owner when we feel the employed cleaner hasn't done a particularly good job. We also found that male cleaners do a more thorough job. Women hoovered round furniture, men would lift and clean underneath. Just our experience though.

It was an individual trading with a company name and who brought a second person with them. It's things like they've cleaned around the toaster, but left the crumbs underneath it. Stuff like that. They've cleaned the front part of the vanity unit but stopped at the back of the sink so there's a dusty strip behind the sink.

I have a lovely lady cleaner - punctual and meticulous, she comes over every 2 weeks, she is not just a cleaner but do the dishes if there are any in sink, sometimes do the laundry.

I take care of her too, from guiding her kids with their career planning to sponsoring one offs trip to her mother’s place near London.

Not all are same though..had some bad experiences too in the past.

I love my shark it does what it is supposed to do.

That toaster thing would bug the hell out of me We tried a few individuals who did that before we found a bigger local company. The cleaners came, did a mostly good job, then the boss contacted us and asked if we were 100% happy. We said no, so he came along next time with the cleaners and went through everything they missed as per my list. Next time they did a bloody good job and we tipped them a bit more. Never had a problem again. I guess, like a good hairdresser, you find a good one and stick with them. We have a good hairdresser

I have a cleaner twice weekly. Before finding her, six years ago, I went through more than a dozen cleaners. People that simply didn’t know how to clean or broke things. Or at least, their level of clean didn’t match what I’d call clean.

Finding good cleaners is hard work sadly. If you paid for two hours, and agreed to what they’d do before hand, they should have stated they either couldn’t do all of that in two hours or suggested more accurately how many hours they’d need to meet your expectations.

Every time I’ve had new cleaners in, I’ve shown them around to give an exact expectation of what I wanted cleaned in each room, and asked their advice on how much time they’d need. In a 6 bed/5bath home they’ve all consistently suggested needing 7 hours but the outcome has been inconsistent across the various cleaners.

Sorry you’ve had disappointing cleaning experience.

Finedon ,

I must be lucky with my cleaner then, she comes for 2 hrs every two weeks and I cannot fault her work.

My only gripe is that she removes plugs from the sockets to plug her cleaner in but she never remembers to put the original plugs back in to the sockets.

I had cleaners about 16 years ago now, and even then I used a larger local company. The owner visited my house and we discussed the weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly tasks. They recommended a first deep clean be done as a baseline for going forward with our agreed cleaning schedule. The deep clean took 8 hours with 2 people, and my house was totally sparkling.

Each month a cleaning supervisor would visit to inspect the level of cleaning. I had a copy of the weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly tasks which would be reviewed between me and the supervisor. This gave us both opportunity to raise any issues.

It did cost a bit more than standard cleaners but it was really worth it as they cleaned to a standard that was discussed and agreed. I also used to love coming home from work to beautifully folded towels and even the ends of the loo roll was fanned, it made me laugh but I did kind of like it.

Well. I hoovered the rugs. And wiped the bit of the taps I could reach. Mr KC hasn't noticed anything different and our daughter has said her homemade doorstop (filled with rice) is damaged and the rice pouring out.

I won't bother again

I think with this type of service if they think or know it is just going to be a one off it is just a case of getting it done as quickly as they can unfortunately.

I’m guessing it’s a bit like builders and other tradesmen, you can’t beat getting someone on recommendation, it’s still no guarantee but better than going in blind.

Yeah it’s actually been quite hard to meet my expectations but in part it’s how long you pay them for. I think 2 hours isn’t enough to do a really thorough job, maybe 3-4 at £20 ph for a good clean but then it’s become expensive when so many will do for half that.

I had someone round the other off Just Life, she said 2 hours and that includes ironing. She did a shit clean then showed the iron to a few shirts was on her phone half the time and then asked for a tip

Yes. There was a woman local to me who did my cleaning for me after I was in hospital. She was amazing! I sort of expected her to just maintain it but she did my oven for me, pulled out the white goods and gave it all a good scrub as well as blitzing everywhere else. We exchanged cleaning tips and ate biscuits. Got very very lucky with her

My friend hired one for when she went back to work. I was there the first time she came, so we went out and left her to it.

Checked after and she hadn't even wiped the base of the toilet. Hadn't got the cobwebs.

2nd time she still didn't clean base of toilet and didn't move things to hoover or wipe...

She gave her a 3rd week and that was equally as lacking so she let her go!

I think you need personal recommendations when it comes to things like that.

I've had mixed results. 1 didn't like my sink rules and asked me about some fetish clothing and had sloppy standards. She didn't get to return and another I got for my mum was terrific, exceeding expectations. Outstandingly clean everywhere she did.
