Oh I forgot to explain for points.

• it keeps people connected who might otherwise not talk to each other

• it allows the rapid spread if (dis)information

• it can prevent loneliness

• one can be in touch with multiple people at the same time

• people who would otherwise have no outlet for their creativity now have one

No, it’s made people more self conscious and insecure. It’s also made being mean near ubiquitous.

I don’t know how it’d be enforced but I see some countries trying to ban it for under 16s. In theory that’s a good idea as they are the most impressionable

It is and will continue to be a double edged sword social media has made it easier to find like minded people to yourself be it hobbies, interests, random and kinks to name a few which broadens community's and canmake it easier to be the person you want to be

On the flip side it has done the same for people with harmful interests and anti social viewpoints to find each other and collect there hate and let it spread

Good and bad, people are better connected, but online connections aren't always real, the bullying, cyber flashing and lack of privacy along with other things I think it does a lot of damage to people's mental health, the social media perfect pics don't show real life and standards that just aren't achievable.

I think there should be an age limit.

I hate that my daughter is growing up in an age that cyber flashing is the new dating, that posting embarrassing pics for everyone to see is considered cool despite the harm it does.

I would say not, there’s a theory that all civilisations reach a point where they self implode and self destruct and that’s why there are no aliens or other worlds contacting us. Historically this was always considered to be as a result of nuclear weapons, but there is now a growing feeling that the invention of the internet might be our catastrophe event as it has lead to a lot of improvements but also allowed for the rise of hatred and violence towards others which wasn’t as mainstream beforehand

Social media could be greatly improved by two things.

• banning under 18's from it

• banning anonymous profiles

These days it's more a tool for abuse, misinformation and stirring trouble and hate than anything social.

As a concept it's great. The ability to communicate with friends and family worldwide from your sofa is a godsend to many.

In reality it's a bear pit. Makes the politics forum in here look like heaven.

Like any part of society there is good and bad.

When I was recovering from sepsis I couldn’t leave my bed let alone my house for weeks at a time, and that is so fucking isolating. Yes I had local friends and family around me but without the people who lived in my phone I don’t know what I would have done. Being able to connect with others who were (or had) going through the same thing was so important and ultimately really helped during my recovery. Many very long nights being in so much pain weren’t alone anymore.

Conversely it could be argued that people also don’t visit as often as it’s easier to check in online, they’re also not faced with the stark reality of someone they care about poorly in front of them. A quick message and their conscience is satisfied.

I don’t see the point in banning children from accessing the internet, what we need to do is educate them and give them the tools needed to navigate it safely. We need accountability for people’s actions and behaviours online, much of it is still unregulated and what is regulated is rarely enforced.

I’m always reminded though of the passage in a Discworld book that sums up the them and us mentality. Social media is a breeding ground for this type of behaviour, and I’m fully guilty of it too.

The answer is "YES"... if you have self control and discipline and manage not to overindulgence and stay away from the high sugar/high fat chocolate bars, it's actually very healthy. Similar to social media if you don't spend most of your day on it and stay away from all the negativity that can affect your mental health, it's actually 👌

Reading the Daily Mail, finding it was too 'stupid' for him so changing to The Express has given my dad some pretty skewed views of the world. He's introduced a new phrase into his everyday language 'woke trans' which is aimed at any man with long hair.

Social media is beyond his grasp fortunately but the ordinary media does a pretty good job of reinforcing people's views, good and bad

Social media has expanded our social circle. This has enabled people to find others who share their views and normalises behaviour extremes. In a small village there may be a few people who are violently anti establishment or pe@do's or have a tendency towards a number of problematic behaviours. Being the odd ones out acted as a curb to such issues. Despite what many claim, feeling the need to fit in is an inherent human trait. Social media has made it easy for such people to find others like them and given them a community to fit in which bypasses traditional restraints.

This affect exists at a less problematic level but acts as a social polariser. Where once you may have been friends with, or at least socially comfortable with, others who held a range of opinions different to yours, social media has allowed people to select friends from a much wider pool and create echo chambers. You see such people on here - "I don't meet Tories" or "Not interested in Woke idiots" etc. We've reached a point where we vet people on a small slice of their life -the bit we see on social media- instead of how we get along with them s individuals. In normal social situations you can often find yourself laughing with and enjoying the company of people whose beliefs you layer find are different to yours. Having already decided you like them, this difference becomes something you accept making you a more tolerant person. SM bypasses this and allows people to believe that anyone with a different life outlook is inherently immoral and unlikeable.

On the plus side, the increased social awareness makes secret abuse harder whether at a personal, organisational or state level.

Like with any technology, or anything really it's a blessing and a curse. Do people not realise it's just another form of (fab). Think how very limited your sexual partner group might have been without such things - sure it would still exist but how many people are part of it because of things like fab/social media. Are there any you cherish as friends/fuckingfantasticfucks (all one word!) that you would miss if that had been the case?

You then transfer that to other aspects of people's lives, friends and family they never see or speak to as easily without it. A grandparent can still be a part of a grandchild's lofe living other side of the world through things like this and other intetlrnet based things.

Honestly anyone that thinks it's as simple as social media bad is poorly narrow minded and can't comprehend scenarios beyond their own situation.

Its open to abuse too, which honestly is all people focus on.
