Is it just another term for 'fuck buddy' / 'friends with benefits?'

Not my interpretation - my current relationship began open. I had feelings for J whereas I think if it was a fuck buddy or friends with benefits situation the feelings wouldn't have been there.

I see an open relationship as a marriage or long term relationship where the partners have agreed to see other people and have sex with them but the relationshp between the two of them is the main base line.

Yeah that's how we see it in our house. Although my wife is choosing not to play (sadly). Our Marriage is very strong, healthy & very good sexually

I'd see it as almost the same as this, with a qualification that if either of the people in the Open Relationship were to meet other people it would be with their partners agreement and approval and that they wouldn't have the meet if that approval and agreement wasn't there.

If it was a FB/FWB situation I wouldn't see the need to keep this person informed of any meets/dates you were going on.
