Wellingborough

It is Saint George's day today. Even though not a lot is known about this saint, it is believed by most historians that he did not even step foot on English soil.

Hagiology is general is not exactly a science. Did he fight a dragon? Was he a saint? You may as well have a day dedicated to Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men. Personally seeing St George's flags around that day makes me cringe, but I am not very patriotic.

Here ya go...

St Augustine. Sent by Pope Gregory I in 597 to 'spread the word' to the Kings of Kent. Established an Abbey (remains of which are still in Canterbury today) to provide a burial place for the Kings of Kent and the Archbishops of Canterbury.

That do ya..???

Of course. It seems mainly morons, racist thugs or little Englanders who celebrate it. They seem to be backward-looking to the empire and how great we used to be as a nation and whilst I hope one day our flag can be a sense of pride for all, I do not think St George's day is necessarily the answer or an important part of that. The Olympics did more to glavanise the country and raise us up as a diverse nation than flags sellotaped to a cortina. Maybe we should have a day off and street parties, but I do not know how you would stop that being hijacked by the BNP or used to make a political point in some areas.

That's like asking Christians to stop believing in Jesus since he never came to England

(or at least I don't think he did)

And, for an extra brownie point, we actually have over 50 home-grown Saints to choose from. The Holy Roman Church used to beatify just about anyone in the early days!
