Yes for small vendors , markets & buying from Facebook marketplace where I want to move the price , for local transport , taxi and eating out in many countries.

Here - for Chai or water taxi - both is 1 Dirham ( 20p) less than the transaction cost

I can’t remember the last time I used cash. We have coins, and use them to help the little one learn about money and arithmetic, but we hardly ever use them to you know, actually buy something. I haven’t yet progressed to using my phone or watch to pay for things though. Still switch with the cards - although when you say ‘switch’ to most people they don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.

I try and use cash as much as I can. As a small business owner the costs to actually take cards can cost as much as a member of staff. Where as it costs nothing to take cash unless banking it.

I also slip a £20 into random clothes pockets in my wardrobe. A suit or overcoat and tend to forget about them till i wear the item of clothing. Its a nice little surprise.

I do most of my spending online, so it's more convenient for me to keep it in the bank.

I tend only to take out cash if I know I'm getting a taxi, since they usually prefer it, and sometimes I gift cash at Christmas.

It depends. If I'm paying for goods or services relating to work then I usually use card or direct transfer because it's easier to account them into allowable expenses. If it's for non-allowables, I always try to use cash to save the vendor transaction fees - fuck the banks.

Yes OP, I still use cash even though I mainly use my card. My Barber gives me a discount if I pay by cash and local independent shops won't take cards as they get charged for card transactions. I also carry it incase of emergencies when I'm on my cycle touring holidays.

I recently went to a fab private party and was supposed to pay in cash when I got there. I parked my car, knew I had notes in my handbag (from pre-covid days!) grabbed one and stuck it in my bra to hand over to the host. In the light, I pulled out this 'note' and it turned out to be a receipt for a secondhand book I'd bought years ago and I was mildly embarrassed to try to hand anyone my old receipt but I realised in that moment that I'd forgotten what cash felt like that I couldn't even recognise it in the dark. Like a moron.

Many years ago I would always maintain £100 in my wallet to cover everyday things that may come up. I would say the main thing that changed this was when it became quite normal to pay card at pubs. Also so many places now thrust a card machine at you without even asking. So I just didn't need to keep going to the cash point to stock up.

However I still use cash a fair bit because of the places I go. But rather than just keeping cash in my wallet I go an withdraw it when needed. I still need it for places that are cash only. Some of the shops, restaurants and even a couple of swingers clubs that I go are cash only. And then there are lots of small businesses I use that I chose to take cash to. Because although they do take card cash is much preferred and this to me is good etiquette, especially when I am a regular. But petrol, supermarkets, chain restaurants etc I just pay card now.

I mean.....it literally does. Usually the only way I remember how many rounds I've bought on a night out is to look at my banking app and see how many bar transactions are there.

As opposed to trying to remember if I spent £50 on tequila shots, kebabs or just dropped it in the back of a taxi. 🤷‍♂️

I do still withdraw cash. I think its useful and practical to have both. Both have their pro's and cons - as everything does.

Many are advocating for cash to be phased out but when I was in Sainsburys this summer and their chip n pins went down they were VERY happy to accept the cash in my wallet allowing me to leave with all my shopping. Vast majority were either leaving their purchases behind, cherry picking essentials to the value of what cash they did have or having their trolleys stored in the cold room for them to return later with cash.

Yes the amount of corporate and state control over us that would come with a cashless society and CBDC doesn't bear thinking about

I recently went to a pub with a friend that neither of us had been to before, when our pints were poured and I came to pay I was informed they were cashless but there were no signs on the bar to warn would be customers of this. I then showed the barman my card and my phone and said they weren't my preferred payment methods and we walked out and onto the next pub and our cash was welcomed there!

I use cash again wherever I can and try to avoid cashless hospitality places. Yes it's convenient to use cards BUT I don't like the loss of privacy or facility... Cash: use it or lose it! I certainly don't want to encourage the control of whoever might be in charge by being forced to use any sort of digital currency. It's coming, unless we resist it.

I have withdrawn cash but rarely, have been on the card on my phone for a while now. It's a godsend. What annoys is the Asian restaurants who refuse to accept cards usually cos they are dodging tax. Who really only accepts cash anymore?

Less chance that spending cash is going to leave a trail back to the person than using a card. Prints get covered by other prints and before so is no indication who was the last person 😂

I prefer to use cash if possible especially in smaller local businesses. Many of them have signs up asking people to use cash because of the increased card charges they have to pay and some, especially takeaways, don't accept cards at all.

It's not always practical though so I'll use a card in larger outlets.

Err, serial numbers on the notes? Everything is traceable. They did this back in the 70's and 80's, they can do it now.

But yeah, fingerprints wouldn't be quite so easy, but still not impossible.

Card for me, I haven't used cash for about 10 years.

I do think if you use cash, you're more likely to spend it. For example say you take £20 out and need to buy something at £11. Over the coming days you WILL spend the £9 and won't remember what on but its usually an impulse buy i.e. a to go coffee etc.

If you didn't have that excess cash in your wallet, you probably wouldn't have got that impulse coffee.

Also, people don't realise how filthy cash is. My cousin works for the local Council. They still accept cash in some machines but they used to be cash only. Every couple of days someone from the Council would empty the machines but they had to wear gloves. This was because it was known that people would fill something like a Fairy bottle with piss and squirt it through where you put the coins, basically as an objection to paying to park/high cost of parking.

Parking machine had to be disinfected along with the work area where they counted the coins at the Council. As for the coins, they were just bagged and the bank informed. I very much doubt the bank sent them away for cleaning.

This is why you should always wash your hands before putting something in your mouth.....

Fair enough, I can see why they might not wish to declare exactly how much cash they take but is that quite the same issue.

Problem is that statements made on line can all too easily become 'facts' without much supporting evidence.

And yet every second shop on my local high street has a sign in the window saying exactly that because as a small business they are being stung by the card companies.

They all have hand written signs saying "Cash is king and is our preferred method of payment. As a small business we are no longer in a position to pay the transaction charges and would appreciate if customers could pay in cash".

Similar signs are also in shop windows in a nearby city and others as I already said above will not accept card payments at all.

Everything isn't traceable because it can be limited especially money because of the market, how it's exchanged from hand to hand serial number means nothing, other than when it was produced and if digitally scanned we aren't in the 70s or 80s it's more advanced

Cash points are few and far between these days and only really seem to be outside supermarkets which don’t really need or want you to pay in cash. The only time I withdraw cash now is if I’m going to the barbers as he prefers cash.

Generally we both use card as cash machines are generally hard to come by these days and we find it easier having that electronic bank trail for budgeting.

Mr sometimes has cash for those people who don't take card - market traders, barbers etc but most of everything is on card.
