On August 23, 1978, the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) attacked a South African Defence Force (SADF) military barracks in Katima Mulilo, South-West Africa (now Namibia). The attack was in retaliation for the Cassinga Massacre that took place on May 4, 1978. The PLAN used an 82mm mortar shell to hit the barracks.
