The director never intended it to be a Christmas movie despite any Christmas themes. The major factor behind the "tradition" for the movies Christmas viewing slot is that it became public domain. It's copyright ended and every TV channel/station/network could rerun the shit out of it over and over for free. Home Alone (and it's sequel) both released November. | |||

Just as Violent Night is a Christmas action comedy Nightmare before Christmas is a hybrid Christmas/Halloween animated horror Christmas is just a setting in all movies. It's a plot device and background theme, not much more than a mcguffin. Very few "Christmas movies" need Christmas to remain as a movie. You can replace Christmas with almost any seasonal holiday and it would still work - one of the arguments used against die hard. | |||
