"Mine tells me I am too short"

Wear platforms. Or fit shorter cupboards.

Do live in a hole in the ground? Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms, and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat.

😁

Trucker - Live in Newcastle

Went to the Dr's a few years ago, gave me a BMI of 32... I had no body fat, really fit and was quite muscular build. Dr still said my health issue was to do with being over weight.

All I done was go in for a follow up to do with a dislocated knee, from falling down a ditch, yet they blamed me being overweight.

I'm a beast in bed

I was told that my BMI was close to being overweight when I last had this check done at my clinic; I'd just cycled 10 miles to get there and I have a 32" waist.

As the Sex Pistols said (well sort of):

"There is no reason why (B.M.I)

I tell you it was all a frame (B.M.I)..."

I went to the Doctors to manage vomiting when I was about 17 while recovering from an eating disorder and was learning how to eat again.

I have always been heavy and even when I visibly looked sickly thin, my BMI would put me at overweight.

The Nurse took my height and weight before the appointment and said my BMI was high and I should think about losing weight just as the Doctor walked in.

He had a right go at her in the hallway!

I just told her what my problem was and she said they have a booklet by King's College that's supposedly the bible of a Low FODMAP diet, but they don't have any at the moment. That was months ago and I still haven't received it.

Most of my research is from them and the Monash society anyway.

At 5' 4" and 156 lb/71 kg I'm overweight bordering on obese. Those of you that haven't blocked me can see I'm far from obese. However, the disclaimer says to ignore if "You are very athletic or muscly. This may lead to a high BMI reading, even if your total body fat is very low." or "You’re from a Black and Asian background. Your healthy BMI level will be lower, so speak to a GP for more information." So basically ignore unless you're of European descent or have a bit of muscle.

Yes, I'm a fat fuck. I'm obese. BMI is about 32.

I was in hospital for 3wks. They couldn't provide meals that I could eat due to lactose intolerance and swallowing problems. I ate very, very little, mainly cup soup and soya yoghurts. How much weight did I lose while eating hardly anything?

Answer - none. Nothing.

I have give up at this point. I couldn't have eaten any less over those 3wks. Most days, I had soya porridge at breakfast, then a soya yoghurt and a banana for lunch and a cup soup plus a soya yoghurt for tea. I drank water and green tea. I lost no weight on this diet.

Does anybody know the origins of the BMI system?

Would you assume it was a nurse, doctor, dietician, surgeon or even a nutritionist. i.e someone trained in the science of human biology. Well it wasn't.

----------------------------------------------------

BMI was devised in the 1830s by Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet (1796-1874), a Belgian mathematician, sociologist, statistician and astronomer.

Trefethen explained that during Quetelet’s time there were no calculators, computers or electronic devices – which is probably why he opted for a super-simple system. Trefethen wonders why institutions today on both sides of the Atlantic continue using the same flawed-BMI formula.

“Perhaps nobody wants to rock the boat”, Trefethen added.

Still want to trust the BMI? I don't.

Peak flow rates for breathing

VO2 max

Fat pecentages

Resting heart rates

blood sugar/salt/co2 levels

there is a better method: waist to height

Dr Margaret Ashwell, an independent consultant and former science director of the British Nutrition Foundation, explained at the 19th Congress on Obesity in Lyon, France, May 2012, that waist-to-height ratio is a superior predictor than BMI of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Ashwell said “Keeping your waist circumference to less than half your height can help increase life expectancy for every person in the world.”

------------------------------------------------------------

This would allow for muscle mass elsewhere to add weight, without affecting the waist line measurements. Legs and arms are prime examples of this. Stomach fat tends to increase with weight, whereas strong abs would reduce the belly fat and possibly shrink the waist line.

With a cracking view

Matthew Pincent was classed a s clinically obese when he was winning medals.

I'm 6ft, and according to the BMI chart, I should be 12 1/2 stone.

I've been that three times !

Growing up, losing weight drastically prior to spinal surgery, and the putting healthy weight back on after the surgery !

Healthiest I've ever been was at 14 1/2 stone, which on the old weight/height charts for those with 'large' build, I was slap bang in the middle of it !

(There was three charts for small, medium and large framed folk)
