East Sussex

There used to be a lot of gossip around this usually aimed at single mothers. I expect there was the odd case of women deliberately conceiving to get housed but as a general rule I can't see a problem with society providing rental accommodation for parents and children.

"Some" people are probably still guilty of doing this now or expanding their broods to get given larger flats or houses. I wouldn't say it doesn't ever happen now at all.

The other common lazy opinion often spouted was 'she only got pregnant for the family allowance '

I can pretty much guarantee that it doesn't. There is no social housing stock. People are generally placed in temp accom- single room, shared kitchen and bathroom. Can be in these for years.

Area dependant

I know a few people who had this mentality and actually got upgraded properties everytime they had a child and still live in them.

Fuck me, my local council can’t even fill in potholes, never mind give a pregnant girl a house.

North West

I got pregnant when I was 16. I didn't claim any benefits other than child benefit (which at the time, everyone received) and did not acquire any council property.
