Got up just now (1.00am) to have a pee and the bathroom window was shrieking, even after closing it tight.

I thought 'What a foul day and night this has been. Whatever must it be like at sea?'

Looked on the Windy website and there is a thing llooking like a hurricane with its eye west of Rockall and its influenc all over the British Isles.

Seriously, would you like to be at sea on a November night like this?

No I would not. It's extremely rough out there and I really hope they don't need to launch the lifeboat.

"No I would not. It's extremely rough out there and I really hope they don't need to launch the lifeboat."

Memories of my childhood in Jersey when, on nights like this, many households would tune the old domestic radio, in its wooden cabinet, to '2182' and listen to unfolding dramas being coordinated by the stentorian voices of Lands End, Niton and Humber Radios.

It wasn't a matter in those days of seeing it as a detached news item on the next day's telly, it was drama keeping us awake from a fireside being kept going past normal bedtime. Our heats would be pounding.. Will the life boat get there in time or will it or the stricken vessel even make it?
