I just realised I keep hearing phrases like “Man up”, “I want a man to be a man”, “Be a better man” and so on. It seems when women say that it’s an acceptable plea, but I think the reaction would be wholly different if us geezahs were to say “I want woman to be a woman”. There’d be an immediate reply of “And what the FUCK do you mean by that??!!!”

Doncha fink?

Bloody women.

I know you’re just joking but… I’m one of those people that still believes there actually are differences between men and women, and that’s totally ok.

We’re still all equals and we still have the vast majority of behaviours in common. But there’s definitely different strengths and weaknesses to both. (Obviously there are exceptions).

Apart from this one, I tend to hear those more from other men. 🤷‍♀️ Dads telling their sons not to cry and that they're ok when they hurt themselves. And it's really toxic. Don't put this just on women Felix 😘

Yep! Family members and even strangers have told my kids “Big boys don’t cry”

So I have to step in and reassure them that they can actually express their emotions.

It's becoming more common for women to call out similar stupid sayings about women. Men need to do it too.

In fact women and men need to back each other up on this.

surrounded by twinkly lights

Women over the ages have sought strong "men" who can nuture, protect and be a family with them. The phrase will never go away, as it's a core belief.

In current days, many are realising more that being "a man" can come in many guises, mental health support is tons better now, than as close as 20 years ago when the man who had mental health issues, would resort to DV and it was an acceptable practice.

I guess balance is key, men owning up to mental health is important, so many brush it under the carpet where it can fester and destroy families

There’s a huge irony and hypocrisy to this, because isn’t even the concept of being trans connected to a stereotypical idea of what a man or a woman should be?

For example a man might “feel” like he’s a woman. But how can that be, if you think there’s no difference between men and a women?

I just believe a lot of these phrases are just another thing being taken out of context 99% of the time now.

No harm is usually intended by them, especially if being said by people born back in the"good old days".

Not everyone using them is doing it in spite, and just as many phrases are said about women all the time.

And men saying them to other men.

Like the one about women having smaller feet so they can do the washing up easier.

I'd laugh it off

Others would need rehab to get over it.

And it's getting worse now with younger people making every phrase an insult, when it's not.

And yes I'll get shot down for saying the above, but it won't offend me. 🤭

Don't your boobs get in the way of washing up though 🤔😛

No, because I'm not a midget!

My tits are higher than the washing up bowl 😂

You have a dishwasher anyway haha"

Obviously, I'm posh 🤭

I don't think anyone uses these phrases in a spiteful way, but they reinforce negative stereotypes around inherent gender qualities.

And I imagine I'm the one who'll get shot down for saying that.

Which is more of a recent thing than the same phrases being used years ago.

It's an issue now, never was before "

Things change. We understand more about psychology and how situations and language can affect people.

And I’m assuming you do it topless and get the girls all soapy? Maybe use them to clean the plates?

Ahem, I mean yes I agree with the fact women have to endure negative stereotypes too. Never seen any though.

La la land

It's a phrase I don't use anymore, because well it's not in the slightest way amusing but can damage others.

It kind of re-enforces the men don't cry mantra and they should be tough and not show emotions. And with suicide being the biggest killer of young males, I just think there are far more amusing and original ways to tease your mates.

I sort of feel that the term man up/woman up could be replaced by adult up in some cases.

Man Up should mean:

- the ability to cry

- freedom to show sensitivity

- find a solution

- express deep emotion and feelings

That's why we have the phrase "grow up"

I remember watching the story of Simon Weston (the sailor horribly burned in the Falklands). He was crying out in pain as the medical staff were moving him and a senior surgeon was telling him to 'man up' or similar.

Meh. I love the blessing/curse I have with the ability to see phrases used within the context and not what others choose for them to.

My brother and I have said "man up" to each other hundreds of times. And we both know exactly what is implied, and it's all based around and including support.

If somebody else told me to man up, and they may very well be saying it from a negative source but I use it as a trigger to deal with my feeling and emotion in a situation. Gather myself. Navigate it and control what I can.
