"Civil and human rights are being violated in countries all over the world. Why visit any of them? Do you worry about human rights violations in this country as passionately?" Human rights are part of the reason I didn't return to Philippines or China when I was doing my teaching English abroad period. I found Egypt quite uncomfortable to be in at times however the reason I was there was to dive very specific wrecks. I just don't see why Dubai UAE etc are being pitched as family holiday resorts, what is the appeal and facilities.

"Never wanted to go. The World Cup in Qatar was also the wrong thing to do. " I assume you know that Qatar and the UAE are two different countries right? It’s like comparing the UK to the USA. The people might look similar to a racist ( mostly white skin and funny clothes) but culturally they are miles apart

"I make a point of not going to counties where I could be imprisoned, flogged or hanged. " You could be imprisoned in the UK?

"I think it's a mistake to visit countries without making yourself aware of their laws and the consequences of breaking them. " This ^ What people don’t seem to realise about the UAE is that if you break the law, owe someone money, have an unpaid parking ticket etc and try and leave you will be detained until it’s fully resolved. This is how the society functions so well and there’s practically no crime or violence , no theft, scams fraud etc it’s not tolerated. The age of consent for sex outside of marriage is 18 and this guy broke the law and the family complained so he will certainly be detained until it’s resolved , there are no exceptions for any type of criminals , everything is done following the proper process. It’s highly unlikely he will go to prison for this , if he does maybe a year or two max, but the process will be followed to investigate any crime

"Because influencers started going there, so people jumped on the bandwagon, like sheep. The only things influencers do for me is influence me to not go, do, say, eat or drink anything they do. " This sums it up pretty well tbh, people go there because they want to appear wealthy and impress people on Instagram. Much nicer places on the planet to explore before Dubai. I went a few years ago with a friend and didn't see the hype.

Most tourists don’t find the best parts as you say end up in all the instagramable bars and restaurants downtown & on the palm & the worse kind of overpriced trips And they come in summer ? WTF , we are practically prisoners in our apartments all summer ! Now it’s winter it’s quite bearable out, the vibe in Al Rigga is good with dozens of live bands & huge night markets every night. Tons of cheap food , clubs & vintage shops once you get out the tourist areas. 2.7 million mostly single immigrants need to live and party at normal prices…. RAK, AB & Sharjah also have lots going on, some amazing galleries, mosques, mountains. Post impressionist exhibition on AD at the moment is really good & sunrise trips into the desert, buried v& abandoned villages to explore. But I totally agree , so many nicer& cheaper places in the world to visit for a holiday

"I worked in the oil and gas industry. The treatment I got as a woman in some Middle East and African countries was abysmal (albeit not the UAE- I’ve never been), so that has put me right off going anywhere where I run the risk if being treated like a 2nd class citizen. A real dichotomy for them; they want western visitors but don’t want western values, customs or behaviours (with good reason in some regards ) But then that causes conflict as cultures clash and the risk of falling foul of some draconian local law/dictat/way of life is a factor. You choose to go there you have to accept this risk. " That probably says more about oil and gas. European women are generally treated very respectful in sub-Saharan Africa and the gulf, even the Middle East. Dubai doesn’t need western visitors, it’s the no.q1 holiday destination in the world and it’s primarily Arabs and Asians. True it doesn’t want or need western culture or values, it has created clean, safe and efficient place to live and work for foreigner who make up 95% of the population, with no need for taxes and practically zero crime. it has the eight principles of Dubai prominently visible for all to see in the malls and public areas - visitors need to read and abide by those.
