Sexist?

I briefly exchanged messages with a lady on Fab, asked to exchanged numbers and she agreed.

We sent a few messages on WhatsApp but I could tell she wasn't really interested.

We decided to exchange photos, but when she sent me hers, her face was very serious. I asked "What do I have to do to make you smile?".

She then said "I'm being sexist" for asking her that question.

So asking a lady, what makes you smile or how can I make you smile is sexist?

She said you were "being sexist" for asking "What do I have to do to make you smile?".

One best avoided me thinks.

Maybe a message back saying "sounds like you need to lighten up and have some cock in you". See how sexist she thinks that is!

It's not sexist. I don't think she understands the true meaning. I suspect she was looking for another word to describe her disdain. 🧸

Glad you found out that you weren’t compatible early on. Better to find out now rather than when you’d invested more.

She’s just upset you didn’t compliment her photo and therefore you’re sexist! People love that throw words around for an instant tap out.

There. I said it.

Off I go to the naughty step.

One of the reasons a forum fab woman hates me is because I said she looked like she wanted to kill me in a nude she sent...

I stand by it.

That's the trouble when you have a RBF and try and be all sultry.

If you think yours are the worst, you should really ask other former members for nudes...

Well dodged op. Imagine what she'd have said if you had asked round to do your ironing

There was a thread the other day about men not smiling in their profile pics. I can't remember if I bothered to type a reply but my thoughts were definitely that I've heard women claim such requests are sexist.

The reasoning is that such a request shows men believe they have a say in how a woman presents herself, how she looks and that "they" believe women should look happy and pretty at all times.

Can it be patronising and sexist to ask a random woman to smile? Yeah, I think it probably can be. Is a request for someone to smile inherently sexist? No, not in the slightest.

Guess it depends how big a deal she makes of it.

Sagittarius A

The only thing I can think of is the social expectation for women to smile, be congenial, pleasant.

I do hear female friends complain about the expectation to smile, especially in the work place, which has been expressed to them explicitly at times by managers etc. The complaint is often either: if I smile then some men take that as an invitation to flirt and I end up having to deal with unwanted attention. Or just maybe I'm not in a happy mood, is that not ok? Maybe I'm ill, in pain, my cat has just died etc.

In any case, I do feel that it is a bit of caustic reaction on her part to assume sexism. So early, without listening to your rationale. Maybe you could have a slightly more sensitive approach with your wording, but then you could end up walking on eggshells. I'd chalk that one up as a bullet dodged.

Personally, I have zero issues with resting bitch face. There's so much more nuance and range of subtle expression from that baseline, than someone beaming at me like a Cheshire cat, which just gets creepy after a while.

I presume it’s the fact women often get told to smile more etc. she probably misinterpreted what you said.

"What can I do to make you smile = what can I do to make you happy" ... it's just an expression of care and consideration. It seems she was just projecting some form of built up emotions in that moment...probably just focused on two words "...you smile" and she took it as " you as a woman need to smile more". It's not sexist or misogynistic.
