So

I put the rice in a saucepan.

Fill with cold water until the first lower knuckle on my first finger

Turn the heat on and boil for 7 minutes.

Turn the heat off leaving the lid on for 7 minutes

Open the lid. Fluff it with a fork.

Done

One cup rice

Two cups water.

Bring to boil

Turn down to simmer until water is absorbed.

Check after ten mins and every five after that. Usually takes around 12 mins.

The size of the cup is irrelevant as long as you use the same one for rice and water

Dear Jamie, I will share with you the timeless advice once given to me years ago when I was a student. It was called: ‘A student’s guide to cooking rice’, and is as follows:

• Rice + Water in bowl in microwave. Cook until edible.

• Or, Rice + water in saucepan on hob. Turn hob on. Cook until edible.

• Or, buy rice cooker. Follow instructions on how to use.

• Or, invite a domesticated friend round to dinner, with the caveat that they have to cook it for you.

• Or, lastly, go to pub, and get curry after.

What she says - would not be without my rice cooker (though in terms of water, I put about 1cm above the level of rice that you have in the cooker).

This is how I do it

Wash your rice

Measure the rice by volume and add double the volume of water to rice to a pan

Boil the rice for 5 minutes covered, leave covered and take off the heat and leave for another 10-15 minutes

All the water should be absorbed

Ignore the ‘traditional’ methods and you don’t need a rice cooker. This produces beautiful rice every time, grains all loose.

In a saucepan with a tightly fitting lid that will keep steam in. Boil a kettle of water. Saucepan on hob, melt a bit of butter and add salt, add rice, do not wash it beforehand. Swish the rice around in the butter making sure all the rice is coated. Then add boiling water to a depth double the height of the rice. Get it boiling, lid on… then turn the heat right down, just enough heat to keep the rice at eating temperature. Leave it. The water will all be absorbed. Eat when grains al dente.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Sadly, the rice did not go well.

I now have a potato in the oven for my chilli.

Im on the sofa with a face mask on looking like Jason Voorhees trying to get over my ordeal.

Better luck next time. Maybe I’ll get a rice cooker

Stand outside and flick your hair around Hants. Make sure you look really confused trying to work out what to order. Job done.

P.S Yolo is right. Potatoes are far better. Don't forget a copious amount of cheese.

Not single and not meeting

Always wash your rice. Pop it in a sieve is easiest then wash it well .. getting ride of some of the starch.

I use a rice cooker and 1 cup rice 1 cup water .. always done perfectly.

Wash the shit out of it 3 or 4 times and then leave it to soak in a bowl for half hour.

Empty water out and put rice into a saucepan, fill with cold water just above the rice level and bring to the boil, once it's boiling turn the heat down and let it lightly simmer... Taste to see when soft and cooked... That'll be perfect fluffy rice.

London (She/Her)

Get a frying pan with a tight fitting lid.

Heat a little oil,

Put a couple of rice grains in to watch when it turns from translucent to white

Pour in your rice (say a mugs worth)

Stir for a few moments to allow the rice to pop

Pour boiling water in (the same amount plus half as of the rice, so in this case a mug and a half of boiling water)

You can use stock instead of water and/or season now. I also put in frozen veg at this point cos I like peas.

Put the lid on the frying pan, turn the heat as low as possible and leave for 10 mins

Take the lid off and stir if still a bit damp

Eat.

130g rice. 330l cold water.

Heat on high until boiling.

Turn down low & add pan lid until all of the water is gone (7 mins ISH)

Turn off heat.

Stir to loosen and put the lid back on to keep moist and steamy. Serve when the main is ready.

Perfect rice. Learned from Gousto.

"One cup rice

The size of the cup is irrelevant as long as you use the same one for rice and water"

Totally agree with this apart from two additions:

1. Cover the rice with a lid whilst simmering.

2. Once the 12 mins are up/all the water is absorbed then turn off the heat and leave the rice for 10 mins. That will make it fluffier.

Oh I was given a great tip by an asian guy I used to work with, never looked back!

So... use basmati, Tilda is elite!

Fill a pan with water (ignore the 2x rule, just fill the pan 3/4 full, its fine!).

Bring to the boil and you'll start to see the rice flying around at the top doing like an up/down/circle motion. Keep it like that until its about 90-95% cooked.

Literally taste/check it, it should still be a little firm/hard still, so a little undercooked.

Then, drain the water off, keep the rice in the same hot pan, gently fluff it up (loosen it) with a falk and keep in pan with the lid on (off the heat). The hot pan will steam it for the final part and it will never really over cook!! So it can steam for 5 mins, 10 mins, its fine... it'll be perfect!!

PS: I am actually really fun at parties 🤣🙈
