Homebase is set for administration

From the land of haribos.

Have you also heard the news and are you as surprised as me that homebase could be heading for a partial collapse?

As a result with the partial collapse, it is putting thousands of jobs at risk, there are some good news and that is, that there is a chance that it could be saved, reports are coming in that chris dawson who owns the range homeware outlets is planning a last minute rescue deal where he would buy 70 homebase stores.

What is your view about it and why it havent it gone so good for homebase, is it because of brexit or because more and more people are ordering things online instead?

The problem is now that with places like Homebase and Wilkos going bust is that it allows places like B&Q to monopolise the market

Curry’s is the only main high street electrical sales shop so they have little or no competition other than on line

The issue for me is that supermarkets now mainly sell everything from food to DIY to electrical to furniture to all of it and everything in between.

Homebase is actually in Administration, not partially collapsed. The Range is buying The brand and 70 of the stores. I think a good question here is wether it's a good thing for The Range to be acquiring Brands in this way, thus wiping out more competition.

That's true about Currys, I want a new cooker and it's the only place I can go to look at one... They merged with PC World, there's a bit of a pattern of big names buying up rivals..

This is my point and even when you think you’re shopping in separate stores they still have the same top line owner. There’s very little options now

I would have thought Argos step in as they are parked in a Sainsbury at the moment. Or Argos not the power it used to be.

I’ve never understood Argos. You buy a product you’ve never seen!

And what happened to Index

Nah, not surprised, standard practice. Stash the cash for yourself, don't pay employees, rinse repeat.

Your jobs are expendable, end of.

That was the case with Wilko, they screwed their staff over .

No protections for peasants, remember that.

Get your bases covered, your bills low, cohabit with fabbers to save bills, avoid the avocado on toast and those 70" tv power bills :D :D :D

Lost our store to a B&M ages ago. Used them online over summer for a paint order and they were very slow. OVerall screwfix, Wickes, toolstation and B&Q usually beat them on anything DIY related so it's no surprise. It is sad though as the HOmebase of 20 years ago was a decent store!

Yes, one of the problems is the supermarkets, as they are selling the same things too.

They've been going bust for the last few years. Stores on private land were sold off, plenty of staff have already lost their jobs as transfers aren't always practical. The last three or four companies that owned them just ran them more into the ground while promising to save them.

Isn't this the basis of buying stuff online, except with Argos no delivery charges and some Muppet doesn't throw your new purchase over next doors fence

That was Bunnings. They had no idea on how the UK worked and didn't last long before they sold it on again.

Those old companies have resisted change. They've become profitless.

If you think about it, imagine the sheer cost of rent of a homebase. It's massive. Really massive.

Look who the current masters are; Toolstation and Screwfix.

Why?

Because they are bloody good at what they do. They have the entire stock list of those kinds of shops, in a small warehouse, with rents 20 times smaller! They're extremely efficient, they're up with the times, they've exploited online sales... Footfall isn't profitable anymore. It costs far too much to have showrooms and so on.

Simply put, those old shops are stuck in 90's style sales techniques, and they don't work in 2024.

Yeah to Hilco who are the current owners. We still have one just but the one where I used to live is boarded up and has been left to rot as it was sold to developers.

"

Its mainly because its a shit place to shop and has been for years.

They seemed to keep trying to dabble in different markets outside of DIY, a bit half arsed- as well as doing the DIY a bit half arsed.

B&Q & Screwfix (and Toolstation) are so much better at hardware type stuff and for anything else you have specialists like CEF or Plumbase.

Then places like The Range, Dunelm or B&M are better at all the other stuff they kept trying to shoehorn in to the range and thats before you factor in online retailers...basically, poor management for years and i'm surprised its lasted that long.
