"I was at a tube station and a woman was carrying a small child and dragging a pushchair up the stairs. A man offered to take the pushchair and she said would you have fucking asked if I was a bloke? Stupid cow. No you can’t win I’m afraid 🤷♀️" That's Wild! I still remember back when I was in school I was on the train with my mum and I was distracted and didn't see a lady come in and stand near me and she slapped on the back of my head for not offering my sit quick enough so since then for me it's been something I've always done so it was the first time I seen or been through something like that before

"I offered my seat to an elderly man with a stick on the bus, even though there were much younger people than me seated. He said no thanks he preferred to stand..I felt a bit of a burk for offering.." Should have kicked his walking stick away and laughed Nelson style when he fell over "HAHA"

"I offered my seat to a young lady that was standing(even though there were other men sitting down no one else offered) and with the most obnoxious attitude she asked me if she looked pregnant? I was shocked so I just said no. It's polite to offer your seat to a lady and she said that's kind of sexist Everyone just kind of looked at us and I sat back down thinking is it wrong to do that nowadays? I've hear ladies say chivalry is dead before but I Never heard that its sexist to offer a seat" I’m actually not surprised but I am disappointed 😢 But lesson learnt and I’ve learned something new for the future 👍🏽

"Regardless of whether it’s sexist or not…. There’s absolutely no reason to be rude. Stand up for yourself etc… without just being rude.

" ... Just how I been brought up" In the same way that, the old boy, mentioned elswhere in the thread, who refused to take the seat being offered, was most likely also brought up. It was an easy to learn and understand protocol which worked fine for a good length of time, rightly or wrongly.

"I find it hard not to be opening doors/giving up seats etc. but I am very wary now after being spat on by a woman I held a door for some years ago. It's impossible to know whether a woman appreciates it, or thinks it's sexist/misogynistic these days. Definitely happier and easier to not chase, not date and not make an effort, by and large. Although it goes against who I am it's all a complete minefield sadly. Pains me and sticks in my throat to say it as I've always been honoured to be called a gentleman. " I can relate to that, I’m mindful as one wonders how it will be received. On the back of that since becoming a dad I have had women some of them about my age stop to open doors when I’m pushing the pram lol. A lot of younger folk are always on their phones be it walking down the road or standing at a bus stop very much focused on their own world they are not used to gestures.

"I think women should be abolished. They are the bane of our lives, their hearts blacker than the purest carbon, they haemorrhage once a month but bleed us dry daily. Their forked tongues are sharper than a Samurai's sword but twice as menacing. They exploit our very good nature and then throw us to the wolves. I don't bother with them anymore and yet they bother me frequently. If they didn't have a quim they would be more appealing. These foul gorgons should be banished to oblivion. Wenches!" Bit harsh.

"Lots of people seem to be judging all women based purely on what we have been told about the response of one woman. I'd say that's a fairly textbook definition of sexism." If you think offering a woman your seat is a textbook definition of sexism then you have a strange definition of sexism. Speaking as someone who is not averse to making sexist comments I feel qualified to comment on this.

"Who ever I offer my seat to isn't obliged to take it and I don't feel embarrassment or rage if they express their preference and decline the offer. I offered , they chose not to. NOTHING to debate. " There's plenty to debate IF the response is a disrespectful or rude one. Politely declining is an absolute right and true equality though. The debate in reality is that of whether to risk abuse for offering, or not offer and risk looking bad for not having done so. A lot of men are in a quandary with this one these days. Simple solution though for someone to show respect by offering being accepted/rejected with equal grace. In my case, being spat on for holding a door (which I'll also do for a man by the way) was totally unwarranted and a pretty despicable act.

I was brought up to be polite, and I am. I'll happily open the door for someone, male or female, and I'll happily give up my seat if I think they need it more than I do, but to offer it to someone just because she's female, nope, it doesn't make any sense to me.

" Sometimes there is no winning! " I’ve noticed it a lot lately. Recently a woman in a cafe shouted out my food order, and because I looked confused (I didn’t know if it was for me) she said “What? Never seen a female chef before!? ” A similar incident happened today too. It really irritates me being accused of doing/thinking things that I’m not.
