He has very legitimate reasons to not want to wear it.

And someone else said above the people who complain the most about it are usually the same ones that would complain if a footballer was forced to do something to show respect to some "woke lefty" cause.

Also the absolute vile racist abuse he has suffered from crowds and social media over all of it is horrendous

What happened to freedom of choice? I remember all those who lost their lives, but I’ll never wear a Poppy. It’s my choice not to, just like it’s someone’s choice to wear one. What other’s do shouldn’t bother you. He’s not disrespecting anyone or telling them not to wear one, is he?

It's also worth pointing out that the Royal British Legion opposes compelling people to wear the poppy, seeing such a stance as going against everything the poppy symbolises.

So if anyone: a footballer, a presenter, Jim down the local chooses not to wear a poppy it's no one else's business.

He was born and raised in Derry, Northern Ireland in an area severely affected by The Troubles. He wrote this on his insta. Long explanation

The poppy represents for me an entire different meaning to what it does for others, am I offended by someone wearing a poppy? No absolutely not, what does offend me tho, is having the poppy try be forced upon me.

The poppy which originally stood for world war 1 and 2 has now been adopted into honouring and remembering British soldiers that have served in all conflicts throughout the world including those who opened fire and murdered 14 innocent civilians on bloody Sunday Jan 1972, in my home city, as well many other brutal crimes throughout Ireland.

That is why I never have and never will wear a poppy. If the poppy’s sole purpose was to honour world war 1 and 2 then I would have no issue wearing it, but that's not the case.

He continued: I respect those who do as I am fully aware we have different beliefs and upbringings, I would never force my beliefs on others, I’m not naive or stupid enough to expect the matter to be reciprocated, especially as the poppy is forced now on everyone in the UK and god forbid someone doesn’t wear it, the abuse they have to endure.

I think it's more to do with what you say or do and the fact that this thread exists is a sign that his freedom to do as he pleases isn't a freedom ,the fact is he doesn't have freedom as such to not wear a poppy I do but he doesn't and why is that you ask ?Well its because of the press the press are trouble makers for those in the public eye ,creating news wherever they can .

A rehash of the same story the tell every year, it’s predictably boring.

Our fallen, and survivors, fought for our freedom to make choices. That includes whether to wear poppys or not.

I CHOOSE not to wear one as well. There’s no disrespectful reason behind it, I simply CHOOSE to remember in my own way.

I guess it's hard for some who weren't directly affected by the actions of the British army in Northern Ireland to understand why a man from that place wouldn't want to wear an emblem representative of that army.

I think his reasoning is pretty clear and his explanation is respectful and well measured.

Except he's not.

He doesn't court the publicity or press coverage. He wants it all to go away along with the vile abuse his family have received.

I have supplied goods and services to the RBL for more than 25 years but I have never and will never wear or buy a poppy out of respect for the innocent people who lost their lives at the hands of British soldiers.

I have zero republican sympathies but it's just getting ridiculous at this stage how narrow minded and idiotic some people can be and the irony is staggering.

As an ex serviceman I respect his right to not wear it and can accept that his reasons are genuinely held despite them not being shared by others ..

In a sense what the fallen and those who came home scarred in many ways, certainly in the second world war fought against and died was to overthrow fascism and all that it entailed..
