Do you agree that doctors should ban patients?

Patients who missed maybe 2 or 3 appointments...classed as time wasters.

Would you ban them??

My nan’s spare room.

I very much get the sentiment but it is dangerous ground.

You just move the problem on I’m guessing.

Yes, I would ban them.

Also at the dentists too.

They can go sit in the long queues for the walk in centres instead if they keep time wasting and taking appointments from the people that needed one and can't get them.

Maybe not ban.. but a fine for repeat offenders... people need to contact the surgery if they no longer need the appointment so someone else can have it..most people have mobile phones these days

Yes.

Certainly not banned from all doctors. But if a surgery is struggling to find appointments enough to see the people who need them and someone repeatedly wastes those slots, they can go wait at the walk in places when they do need to be seen and keep appointments for people who both need and use them.

It takes 2 minutes to cancel a appointment by phone, it's hard enough to get a appointment without people wasting them

.Maybe a fine for repeat offenders and they couldn't attend their doctors until they payed the fine.

What happens to these banned patients if they break a leg? Develop cancer?

We haven't suddenly produced people who miss appointments, they've always been there. What we have is an overstretched service and blanking the problem on a minority of bad patients is a way of avoiding the fact.

Before we start banning people and leaving them to potentially die because they don't get diagnosed, I'd suggest we start with a reform of the health service.

Some context on the patient in particular would be needed but in a case where someone has no known mental/physical issues and can’t be bothered to ring up and cancel an appointment on multiple occasions should definitely be banned.

They would still have access to health care in an emergency via urgent care/A&E.

Dentists already do this. I don’t know if GP’s do?

Mine sends a text about 48 hours before asking to please reply with CANCEL before 8am on the day of appointment if you can't make it. It's not even a 2 minute job 💜

They might have missed 2 or 3 appointments cause they’re dead. No need to make it worse by posthumously banning them.

BRIDGWATER

My disabled daughter nearly got banned from our new Drs. She had a nurse and Drs appointment on the day of Storm Eugene, I had cancelled the appointments via their online service. I was later told that I have to ring to cancel despite the cancellation link being available on their website. We had been transferred to that practice because our old practice got closed down. So no I don't think people should be banned automatically as there can be an explanation.

Also for the person mentioning dentists, there is practically no NHS dentists available now. Most people have to go private, I have had to myself..

This would be the biggest concern with banning. In the NHS’s current state do they have the ability to correctly identify who is time wasting and who is genuinely not at fault…..

In this case obviously not and probably not in general.

No.

It seems quite arbitrary 2 or 3 missed appointments.

My last two doctors appointments were cancelled by the doctor. The majority of my appointments usually entail the doctor being late, quite often I have had to wait over an hour. Waiting times for simple GP appointments can be weeks, waiting lists for referrals can be months if not years.

Before medical staff start projecting their frustrations onto service users I think they need to appreciate many are having their time wasted on significantly larger scale, than they are and recognise that they are a part of that service.

As timewasters yes it's only a simple phone call to say I can't make it .

Banned people would still get ill and injured. And if they were banned from their GP, where would they go? They'd be forced to go to the hospital for everything.

No, I almost got banned from my dentist for missing an appointment - I turned up and collapsed in the waiting room then they tried to say I couldn't have another appointment because I failed to attend 🙄

Luckily after a complaint I was allowed another appointment.

There's so many reasons people miss appointments, maybe charge a deposit for repeat offenders but don't ban help.

I struggle to get a single appointment let alone miss 2-3 of them!!!

It’s a tough question as everyone deserves medical care even if they’re not showing up without good reason.

I would say cancel by phone or online but even that can be difficult with my surgery!!

Definitely out of order if they are wasting the already valuable time of GPs but also making it harder for everyone else to get appointments 😡

I thought this was about banning time wasters from fab at first but without saying that.

If they don’t give notice- yes remove them from records and refuse to offer appointments at the surgery. Notify them of other local ones they can register at.

It's well high impossible to get through to our surgery by phone. I think possibly implement a phone call only appointment system for serial no shows. That way a doctor has only wasted the amount of time it takes to make the call.

I totally understand that, that's why at times a person may receive a text message as a reminder, that they have an appointment. But who knows at the time what is going on in someone's life and maybe forgot had an appointment.

Forgetfulness is also a symptom of several medical conditions.

It would be a bit ironic really for a GP to ban someone for exhibiting symptoms of known medical conditions.

It's NHS, are they able to opt out of their NI contributions?

You can't charge someone for something then ban them from accessing it. Fine them, sure. But not banning.

That's a reasonable argument. As long as we can fine doctors for missing appointments, or not meeting guidance within the documents that define that social contract e.g. the NHS constitution.

And even handing out fines to these kind of patients seems wrong to me on so many levels

Repeat offenders yes, anyone can forget to attend /cancel once.

If it's done regularly it's annoying, as someone else could have had their slot.

Agreed. I have inattentive ADHD, keeping track of appointments is the bane of my existence. I spend half my time trying not to drop the ball on it and it still happens every week.

But as long as it works both ways and I can fine them when they drop the ball, I am fine with that. I will definitely be making more than they do out of the deal.

No not at all, if you are genuinely ill there's a multitude of reasons why you might not be able to attend

Personally i would much rather have a video appointment with a doctor for routine discussions and allow those most in need to have home visits instead x

I think the NHS has a lot of problems that need mending, and constantly throwing money at it doesn't seem to work, perhaps needs one god almighty overseeing it all instead of trusts playing russian roulette with funds allocated to them...so No, I wouldn't ever ban a patient, but try and understand as to why they feel the need to miss appointments in the first place

unfortunately due to where I work if we have a lock down I can't get out to go to drs appointments and most times I'm no where near a fone to ring up to say I need to cancel or I'm going to be late. It sucks but I think they now understand if I miss appointments. It is costing me a fortune in quality streets tho ......

We have a appointment system from 8 till 9 in morning which is impossible to get through to, after that it's really easy we also have a online system where I can get repeat prescriptions or a call back or to cancel I mostly use that now and never have any issues with it.

There are so many genuine reasons why people can't cancel, we can't let the few, ruin it for the many who need help.

it works both ways

why should patients be sat in the waiting room way past there arranged time.

even ive been sat in there for 1/2 hr past the time and walked out of the place after visiting reception to say i was leaving.

should we ban people no

a warning should be issued after 3-4 missed appointments then slot them onto a wait to see the doctor open slots

Time never gets wasted, and patient appointments just get delayed or if someone doesn't turn up, obviously it's the next patient who goes in as most GP practices have a check in once you arrive

My GP you could order medication by using the automated phone call, now unexpectedly it's not there, so I called them, pressed for admin, and was told it's never been available at night which is absurd as I've regularly use. And calling me a liar doesn't go down well, she slammed the phone down. Hmmm attitude 😂🤣 it's not over

Or... like my surgery, just don't have actual physical in-person appointments any more until a Dr has done a consultation over the phone. Which comes a couple of days after you've submitted an online request for a call with full details of your 'condition'.

We have no walk-in centres here and either have to hope we can take the call when the Dr deigns to get in touch, or go to A&E if it's something a pharmacist can't help with.

I guess not having actual appointments improves the surgery's attendance scores!

I had my yearly thyroid function blood test recently. The results were available on the NHS app. The doctor who reviewed them had booked it as two face to face consultations. That seems a little duplicitous to me
