I don’t struggle to treat myself when it’s little or inexpensive things, but I would hesitate if it was something pricier. I’d probably find it easier if I sold a few other bits (on vinted etc), returned something else, worked it out cost per wear or managed to find some sort of discount code for them. But ultimately, if you love something and it won’t get you into debt, buy it - life is too short

Trainers is the one thing that I justify splurging on. Comfort is everything. Plus your feet ain't getting any bigger so if you look after them and have a few pairs to rotate they'll last forever

Treat, yes. As in, I don't actually need it or the money needs to go elsewhere.

If I need something then I get it as and when I can, I don't go without because I need to have footwear and clothes just like the children do.

It usually takes me longer to buy something for myself because I'm really fussy about what I wear and it takes ages to find what I like.

It verry much depends theses days.

Being a homeowner with a mortgage has made me thunk about potential purchases more.

Nowadays I prefer to buy qualitly over quantity when it comes to clothes.

The last pair of new trainers I bought apart from ones for running in was probably 15 years ago, used to buy loads and then never wear them now I just get second hand ones.

I don’t mind if it’s little purchases here and there. If it’s pricey though I do feel a little guilty and struggle to justify spending X amount on myself. If I do need it I compensate for it by buying the kids something they want, spending more money than I had originally planned. It’s a pain!

It's a strange one for me! I see lots of things I like and can afford yet I'll hardly ever buy expensive things! I was bought up in a Children's Home and money just wasn't available for many new things. We've got money now, due to a lifetime of work and via inheritance etc but I still won't spend. I'll encourage the wife to buy what she wants and will buy her expensive presents but for me, no, I just can't do it!!! Very strange! Family and friends don't understand me and in some ways neither do I!!

I have never been a clothes fan though try to look respectable.

My main expenses were on the kink scene and some of the equipment I bought for it.

I definitely struggle to do that. It's funny that I'm happy to shell out that amount for a hotel and train for a group social but but for something less than that total price, I look at the pros and cons of it for ages. Maybe because it's a one off payment rather than an investment that you use every day, there's more pressure to get it right? 🤔

Break it down to cost per wear. If the last pair lasted 4 years then wearing once per week is roughly 200 times of wearing. Divide the cost of the trainers by the amount of times they will be worn. They are worth it. You are worth it. Buy the things. Wear the things.

This may be sad that i think this way about clothes, but hear me out....£100....wear them 10 times they're a tenner. 100, a pound each time....u get a few years out of them it's pennies.....if u think u will get ur monies worth, go for it mate.....I struggle to buy for myself so end up working it out this way if its not something a desperately want......then I just buy it and fuck the consequences

But he just keeps getting parcels delivered now and they just spend time stacked up in a wardrobe. They don't even see the light of day.

It's frustrating because he never misses ant parcels I have delivered and always asks me why I need more shoes, dresses, whatever, cheeky that.

When I quiz him he says they are an investment... bollocks.

Yeah, I struggle with this. I'm better than I was, but it'll often take me months to decide to finally buy clothes and shoes that I actually need. The kids get whatever they need as soon as they need it.

Spending money on things like hotels and transport in order to spend time with people is never an issue, though.

I can tell you from experience that they don't, mores the pity.

He doesnt just collect originals, he even buys new editions of existing trainers. He loves Adidas and I think he loves Samba the best. We must have had almost a dozen different variants of Samba in the last few months. I don't just mean colours but slightly different designs. He's like a kid showing me but to be honest I cannot tell the difference but he seems made up with them.

Think he loves them more than me.

Nope, I am terrible at treating myself.

I spend weeks/months having a mental war with myself as to whether I really need it or whether I can justify it, even when it's something I genuinely need as opposed to treats.

I think that's why I appreciate gifts so much because you've taken that mental load and decision off of my shoulders.

Hubby is on the complete other end of the spectrum and won't hesitate to spend hundreds/thousands on the things he likes. x

And the only thing I have no qualms about buying is trainers ,I've broke my feet so many times as soon as my sneakers loose the sturdyness I have to get more as they cripple my feet , I know I'm up to around 65 pairs in my bedroom and bout 8 pairs in the front room , all in perfect knick but the soles have softened .

Just wanted to say thank you Mr Pickles. Reading this prompted me to do one of my increasingly desperate checks to see if anyone has the trainers I want in my size. As a regular runner, it is really frustrating when a manufacturer stops making a shoe you've trusted and used for years. In this particular case, either someone has found a few extra boxes in the back of the store room or the irate feedback across social media, in particular on the manufacturers sponsored athletes, pages has caused them to have a re-think.

Anyway. Thank you, two new pairs on the way, 2 because they were exceptionally cheap (almost back to pre pandemic prices) and because I don't want to be in the same position sometime next year.
