OK so we all know about or have used Windows 8 etc and the mixed opinions on it just wanted to share this with anyone about to upgrade or buy a new PC......

A friend asked me to install Win 7 on a 3 week old Dell PC the other day as he didnt like Win 8 at all, a simple task for me or so i thought !!

Dell in their infinite wisdom and partnership with MS have now installed into the BIOS a UEFI boot manager which unless you know what your doing will confuse the hell out of you and ultimately try to stop you installing Win 7 as it loops back on itself looking to repair Win 8.

I did find a work around which took a little time lol but got there in the end.

So if you are looking to buy a new PC with Win 8 on be aware that if you dont like it you will need someone who really knows what they are doing to go back to Win 7.

Sorry if anyone finds this boring lol but just wanted to share the info lol

Ahh good to hear and i like geeks especially female ones lol

Its not too bad but clearly aimed at the Touchscreen/Tablet market.

Dual booted a dark version of Win 8 the other day and was pretty quick but still a tad annoying lol x

windows 7 is very good

windows 8 will be bad

windows 9 will be good

im sticking with windows 7 and i will on my next pc build in a cpl of months

Lol yeh your probably right, im currently running win 7 ultimate 64 bit but with all the MS shit stripped out and it actually runs very very fast unlike Win 8 which can be slow and chuggy cos of all the shit running in background !

Bit tricky to explain Ryan, when you change the boot order ( IE to USB boot ) it still trys to find and repair Win 8 on restart cos of the UEFI kicking in which is built into the BIOS grrr !!

The work around is to make a UEFI enabled USB boot, fairly straight forward but you need to change a couple of files on the boot drive.

Yep lol !! My first port of call was to remove the hard drive and do a full format, however as i said the UEFI boot manager is built into the bios so nothing to do with hard drive

I used the windows 8 consumer preview from the day microsoft made it available and that was very very good,the only reason i upgraded to the offical release is because it was offered to me by microsoft for a few quid and the consumer preview expired the beginning of february, and i must say that the consumer preview was much more superior to the proper version. why do microsoft always create something thats excellent then totally ruin it? ill never know

Lol When they release the consumer version they pack it with useless start up services and other inane MS drivel that no one ever uses

Go to services and change the ones you never use to manual and see how much faster your pc is !!

Oh yeah at the moment im using fedora 17 64bit as an os, and its excellent, comes with everything you need already built in, dont need any drivers because everything just works when you plug it in, the only problem is the lack of applications, but it can open almost any file created on a MS system

Previous experience of PC's running Microsoft products meant there was only one choice....

The only windows I'm interested in are the ones I look out of with nice views - and the ones many of my clients appear to lick!

While I love Apple and their products, a self confessed Apple junkie, I could not be without my Dell/Windows for work...Apple are fine for play but not work imo.

would have agreed with you 100% until apple released the most recent version of their os on the Imac, its gone from absolute perfection to absolute crap! so much so that my Imac is now in the spare room as its so buggy tthat ive lost patience using it

Apple are great for graphics, music etc but severely lack the ability to be upgradeable, tweakable and more tailored to specific users requirements.

The issue appears to that there is an option called 'Secureboot' in the Bios, plus, the UEFI utilises GPT over MBR for disk partitioning - so you effectively have hidden recovery partitions and probably an OEM recovery partition built in as well which you cannot see because the Bois never presets them as partitions and hides them away.

If you disable the Secureboot option, I believe it allows you to delete the recovery and OEM partitions - though obviously you would never recover back to Windows 8 in the future unless you had install DVDs.

Of just replace the hard drive with a brand new (non-Dell) one which preserves your OEM drive if you ever want to sell it on later.

if i still had my desktop i would probably stick it on a dual-boot just to check out the UI and stuff. have heard lots of negs regarding it though

is there an option to switch to a classic view?

The problem with Win 8 is has been made to preced all the new touchscreen tech that is about to be released ( yes i know its around already ) but there is also gesture control coming alongside etc.

The metro interface is pretty pointless unless your using touchscreen so reverting to normal desktop is pretty much like Win 7 anyway !

Untill the full capability of touchscreen and gesture control is released with no bugs or failings then Win 8 wont be able to utilise its full potential.

There are moves afoot by MS put some of the W8 debacle bwhind them. Version 8.1 has now been released to subscribers, allows direct to desktop boot and all sorts of more familiar things.

Be aware, buy a new PC\lappy with W8 on it, you may not be able to install W7 instead, nothing to do with the new W8 install but the very latest hardware in some systems (like Dell) has no equivilant drivers for W7.

Anyone wants definitive instructions on flattening the W8 install and putting W7 instead, let me know I will post you required info.

Windows 8 is supposed to be backwardly compatible with Windows 7 and Vista drivers - sometimes however you need to load 'Unsigned' drivers.

If you go to the Advanced Startup app in Windows 8, you can choose to reboot the computer with Advanced Startup options enabled.

You’ll then be given the opportunity to boot into various troubleshooting modes, including Safe Mode, Debugging Mode and the snappily-named “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement” mode.

The last one is your friend for getting those unsigned drivers to load. Once loaded you can then reboot into normal Windows mode.

Windows 8.1 (Blue) hasn't been released officially to anyone, and Microsoft have only HINTED about what will be in it. The speculation comes from a leaked version.

All sites are merely reporting rumours based on a leaked version, but I'll let you know as will see the developer preview before general consumers get to see it
