Well, John Carpenter's Halloween. For me that film is for Halloween what The Wizard of Oz is for Christmas films.

Yeah, fair comment on that. Halloween 2 isn't great. Carpenter was forced into that though and didn't direct that himself.

Boris Karloff's Frankenstein films are always a safe bet, as is Night Of The Demon. Plus the Bottom Halloween episode, obviously

I loved the original Halloween, but watching it back now it doesn’t hit the same.

Does Jaws count?

If not then probably Alien.

I only watched Halloween 2 for the first time the other day. I actually thought it was OK, not a patch on the first one though.

It's just "OK" really. I don't think there's been a good one since the original. Though I did like Halloween 3, Season of the Witch. It dared to be different and I think a Halloween anthology franchise would have been a good idea.

That's why I like Rob Zombies Halloween 2. There is a plot to it and a back story. Carpenters is just a drawn out game of hospital hide and seek.

But that's the problem with Rob Zombie's version. He tells you too much about Michael which misses the point of the original character. Michael is a force of evil, no one knows why he does what he does. That's what makes him such a powerful character. To quote Dr Loomis "I realised that what was living behind that boys eyes was purely and simply evil". No back story, no tortured childhood, no reason or excuse. Just evil.

Yep, Carpenter's Halloween is the best. Even his self composed opening title music is enough to make you fill your pants.
