Do we really need to change the clocks?

From the land of haribos.

There have been talks for a long time now that they might stop the change of the time, did you know that the european parliament in 2019 supported the proposal by a large majority suggesting time changes should be scrapped in 2021.

What is your view about it? I think it is about time to stop it too, because you have to keep adjusting your sleep time every time as well

It’s really not necessary anymore. I doubt it makes a positive difference to many people and there are other workarounds to get over problems of later mornings.

If we didn’t change the clocks you would not benefit from those pleasant long summer evenings as standard GMT is actually winter time, it is changed for the summer.

There’s no reason not to run on BST as standard.

And that is the big Question would we stay on GMT OR summer time. I like the summer evenings, but hate dark mornings.

Standard time will always be GMT, what you are saying is we should permanently be GMT +1hr, which is what a lot of people think should happen.

Simple answer, yes.

If we stuck to GMT, it would start to get light at around 2 am in the summer (ie, around longest day/late June). Wouldn't you rather have that extra hour of light in the evening, relaxing in the garden with a pint or glass if wine.

If we were permanently on BST, it would still be dark approaching 9 am in winter around shortest day.

I always look forward to the weekend at the end of March when the clocks go forward and all of a sudden it's light at 8pm. Makes you think (or hope) that summer and nice days aren't too far away - not that we'd have noticed this year.

And it's normally the Jocks that whinge about it, so anything that sets them off is fine with me.

The clock changes are annoying. Either way be it GMT or BST ppl would adjust accordingly once it was set and left alone.

I think it’s necessary and it may seem a non issue to those in the south but daylight is precious here in winter and the clocks going back helps with that.

It’s a bigger issue for those further north than me. Staying on either GMT or BST year around isnt the answer unfortunately

Was going to say, wasn't it always about the farmers in the far northern reaches of Scotland? Guess they should be the ones with the final say since they feed a good chunk of us!

Wouldn’t particularly bother me being on different time zone to England, but in the here and now the daylight is an issue through winter at the higher latitudes so staying on summer time isn’t that great an idea.

Although I suppose England going over to French time will upset some.

Can we not have a Scottish and an England/ Welsh Time Zone instead of changing the clocks twice every year?

I’m blaming the clocks going back for me being wide awake at 7.00am this morning on a day off.

I think there are 60/70 countries that have some form of clock changing.

We should leave them unchanged or even move them forward another hour permanently. Also, why is it that they change back about 7-8 weeks before the shortest day, but don't change forward until about 13-14 weeks after it, shouldn't it be the same?

It's fine as it is. Otherwise in winter it would be dark during morning rush hour when both children and adults are out and about (evenings schools finish before rush hour). In summer it's better to have the extra light in the evenings otherwise it would be light around 4am.
