Just seen the add for this new movie. Stars Denzil Washington and directed by Ridley Scott again.

Fans of the original, welcome the new one or do you think it's a mistake..?.

Going in to this one with an open mind, i don’t listen to critics or other peoples opinions, we’re all different, the first movie was amazing in every way, Russell Crow was just perfect for the part, as this one has the same team behind it but obviously a different story, I’m pretty sure it’s going to do just as well at the box office.

I would have dreaded this as in leave Gladiator alone. But Top Gun Maverick showed me a sequel can be as good as - better - than the original while staying true to the spirit of the original. So i am hoping for the sake from the new Gladiator movie.

A gladiator goes to the arena and kills people, becomes popular, eventually dies. I'm not sure what this adds to the original. At least with Top Gun they new to add the cheese and campness. I can see this making a fortune but I don't think it will be an epic movie like the original

Not sure why they called it Gladiator 2 unless it’s a prequel to the original film. Are any of the characters from the first film to return ?

I like Ridley Scott so it’ll be an interesting watch but for me a sequel needs to have a connection or two with the original. As I haven’t seen the trailer or cast list, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

So…..and unfortunately……

The trailers are the best parts of the film!

I’d describe Gladiator II as Gladiator “lite”

There’s nothing wrong with the film per se, however it relies heavily upon the fact you’ve seen the original and you’re heavily invested in it’s story.

Zero character build undermines the entire plot, you’re sat there literally having to add narrative in your head for it to make sense; by the time it gets to the final act you really don’t care who lives or dies.

Unlike the original where you’re rooting for Maximus and his triumph against tyranny, by hour two in the sequel you simply shrug!

Several people quit on it about half way thru and a couple on my row started talking showing their obvious disinterest.

Cinema is cheap chips where I live so £6 for an iMax ticket is worth the entry fee and with almost the entire screen to oneself it was fine; but UK cinema prices and a full auditorium, I’m not sure I’d bother.

Disappointed

It looks like it’ll be visually spectacular

But will lack any story whatsoever. Will have too much reliance on modern day film practices(I believe Denzel Washington has actually said he was not allowed to properly get into character)

Be full of call backs to the much superior original and try to one up it in a lot of scenes

Will lose the grounded feel of the first one in favour of weightless men flying all over the place

My prediction

Absolutely agreed, an association with the original would have worked better now having seen it; that said, it’s about box office revenue nowadays more than ever before.

Given it’s so different from the original and has so much crammed into a couple of hours, it would have benefited from a twelve part Netflix story told slowly over twelve hours.

Not Netflix! Netflix don't do told slowly. Netflix is one of the worst creators of series for this. The pacing of their stuff is terrible for the majority (by design). They cram so much in to 8 or less episodes and don't have shots in a scene longer than 3 seconds. All due to what they perceive as viewer attention not lasting beyond that.

"I read earlier than Denzil said a man on man kiss scene was cut.

Remind me, what fucking year are we in? "

What's the reason for it being cut though? Lots of scenes in movies get cut. Much more than people realise. And yes I know one of the reasons it may have been cut but maybe that scene had no bearing on the plot or the story - mostly to fit a run time.

I'd rather that get cut than a scene that was critical to world or character building in the scope of the story. Some movies are ruined by having critical scenes cut but trash scenes left in.

Context is superior to all.

Denzil wasn’t happy about it. I’ll have to go bs k and see what the reason was but it was a single scene, a few seconds.

Saw the new film. It was OKish. The first 75% of the film was decent. Not boring, just some terrible CG. The last half an hour was disappointing. I think Paul Mescal was a bad casting choice. I like him as an actor. But he doesn't have the charisma of Russell Crowe and it was glaringly visible towards the end. The writing was also very lazy towards the end.

Still a serviceable movie. Can watch once.

The set-up was rather by-numbers: let's get your wife killed and get you sold into sl*very so you're nursing a murderous grudge against the Roman Empire.

The battle scenes are truly spectacular though and Denzel is good fun so I'd give it a solid 7/10.

Having watched it the cinema photography, sound etc is amazing.

However in my opinion the storyline is almost identical to Gladiator and nowhere near as good also the plot is all over the place as in who is siding with who and the reasons why.

I don’t think they would have been able to fill the coliseum with water and sharks back then and what’s the monkeys fight scene all about.

It should not have been made as a sequel to the original film a stand alone film at best.

I personally think this was a rushed job and a very poor effort 7/10 if even that.

Reinforces my opinion that Ridley Scott has to be the greatest fall off in directing history

3 of his earlier films are genuine classics that will be watched 100 years from now and everything since The Martian (which was good but not great) has been drivel.

I'd have to disagree with this being a bad film.

It's an ok film but I didn't enjoy it in fact I walked out for fear it would spoil my memories of the Russel Crowe film .For me it didn't stand alone it just copied the original .

It's not a bad film, but it's not a great film either. Bang average

It’s only my opinion guys, and brace yourself…

Fucking awful, like always, they left it too late for the second film after the first, when they could have carried on the hype and buzz.

Don’t hate me for it though, watch it and make up your own mind.

The first one quite simply set the bar for any sequel. I thought some bits of the new one were good others average. That’s my opinion on it.

"Just seen the add for this new movie. Stars Denzil Washington and directed by Ridley Scott again.

Fans of the original, welcome the new one or do you think it's a mistake..?."

It's pretty poor compared with the first one. The guy playing Gladiator isn't very good, poor casting choice and Denzil seems out of place. Can't say I liked it that much.

"Having watched it the cinema photography, sound etc is amazing.

I personally think this was a rushed job and a very poor effort 7/10 if even that.

they definitely did fill the collusuem with water.. they reenacted sea battles there. And the monkey scene. Making people fight against animals was a common theme "

If you ever get the chance to go to Puy de Fou in France (there is also one in Spain and apparently there is a plan to build one in the UK) you can see this done somewhat how it was done in ancient times. Apart from the actual killing, obvs….

Not seen it yet, will wait till it comes to Sky, but as a massive fan of the original, my opinion is that it will be a tough act to follow.

The whole casting of the first film was so well done and they all played their parts beautifully.

Absolutely agree with this. And this was in the presence of Russel Crowe at the height of his powers. If I had to be reincarnated as another bloke I’d want to be Djimon Hounsou.

"You generally can't go wrong with Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott. We today's CGI as well, I think it will be a very good sequel to the original 24yrs ago lol"

Ridley Scott has made better movies - Alien, Thelma & Louise, BladeRunner, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster (with Denzel!), and The Martian. But he's also given us some stinkers, let's not forget GI Jane, Robin Hood ('let's do Gladiator again Russell?') and Exodous: Gods and Kings.

TBH I'm not excited for Gladiator 2, but as most are pointing out, Denzel can't make a bad movie, so... 🤷‍♂️

Spoiler alert

He died in the first one so it was always going to be a different story

Watched it yesterday

Was interesting to see what they did with it but too long and not a good story line

Would a boy forget his mother like that

And sharks....let's not forget sharks

He was in Normal People which everyone praised during lockdown but is on my list of worst shows ever made and by far the most depressing.

He's a former GAA player pretending to be an actor and it's blindingly obvious every time I see him.

It's poorly cast, poorly written, and predictable.
