The funeral today.....

So todays the day the lay to rest The Iron Lady.

Not that I particularly cared for her or supported her but I do believe everyone has the right to a peaceful and respectful funeral.

So in that respect i hope today goes smoothly with no violence, riots , clashes etc, although i fear this will not be the case ??

What do you guys reckon ??

I agree with you but can't see it being peaceful

I agree, it should be peaceful. The lady is dead and any violence and protests will only hurt her family and further cost the tax payer.

I doubt the Met will let anything kick off during the funeral. If there are 'disturbances' they'd be more likely to happen this evening in the aftermath.... after all, it's so much more fun to go looting Currys when the shop's shut, innit....

Just shows how divisive the woman was and still is. If there was a basic simple family and friends funeral that would not stick in the gullet but the fact the security level is so high shows this is more about political posturing.

Money found from nowhere not suprisingly. Lets assume for one moment the figure of ten million is a close figure of cost there is no way on gods earth can this be justified how many folk who are in genuine poverty would this money help.

Shameful.

The funeral has been arranged for a long time and signed off by Blair and subsequently Brown when they were in power. In the great scheme of things £10m is nothing.

I hope she has a peaceful funeral, no I don't think it should be costing the public so much but theres fuck all I can do about it so whats the point moaning about it?

On the subject of the cost a couple of things

- all PM's are entitled to a state funeral so discussion on cost is more properly should we pay for ex-PM's funerals

- this country paid for the last papal visit at £12m, normally such visits are paid for by the Vatican but in this instance it was a state visit & UK taxpayer paid.

Shortly after leaving office Blair converted to Catholicism, the Catholic church accepting him despite his support for gay rights

As someone who detests Blair I'm outraged at this waste of taxpayers money and done in such an underhand way - I don't hear the left shouting about this!!!

That was over 20 years ago - are you still sayting those communities are still in trouble?

If so I suggest equal criticism is levelled at the last labour government who failed to help these communities despite a period of economic wealth in this county

I may have totally disagreed with her politics and even as a young child could be heard on demos against the closing of a children's hospital shouting "Maggie Thatcher milk snatcher" HOWEVER I find the thought of someone protesting at her funeral or being so disrespectful utterly deplorable.

Respect is a two way thing and those protesting etc do not earn respect from me. I hope the family are able to grieve today. Cremating a parent is never an easy thing.

As for comments of drop the coffin... Grow up.

Who has suggested £10 million for the funeral? The media! Who believes a wild guess, rather than fact, those that do, shame on you for being sucked in by the media!!.......The real cost is being revealed after the event, the ceremony and it's planning was done by the Blair government. The military are paid for anyway. The Thatcher family are making an unpresedented contribution to the whole thing, again how much will be published after. Whatever your politics are imaterial on this day, it is about the British people and the world ( shown by the dignitaries who wanted to show their respects )doing so for one of our prime ministers, who served our country in public office. The £10m figure has been suggested because Great Aunt Maude is refusing to say what the funeral has cost until after the funeral. It's a fair assumption on what we know State occasions cost.

I've heard figures between 8-10 million. I believe it's an all encompassing figure taking into account people's wages for the days they've worked on it. I imagine all Metpol leave was cancelled and overtime granted for instance. The army is paid for yes, but there's the transport costs for them all. The hotel bills for various dignitaries (those not in embassies) will be paid no doubt. And the loss of trade as people not concerned stay away for the day. I know 3 people not commuting in today.

And unless there are any members of her family on here I suspect they are highly unlikely to hear about or be offended by any comments people are making here. So the only ones getting in a tiz are yourselves.

As I was suggesting, let's wait until the facts are presented, before we make an informed statement on figures, that is all. Whatever the figure, it would still be unpalitable to some and I respect peoples right to object in a democracy, it's what defines us. Tiz? I agree that the very mention of a certain person would bring comments from both ends of the spectrum. Today is what it is, I suspect that we will be having the same fractious comments when another prime minister passes and has the same state funeral bestowed upon them. State occassions cost, the cost of the Queens recent celebration, William and Kates wedding, the London Marathon, the olympics . It's what it is.

"Theres always one. Have a bit a respect for the dead. Ffs some people are so fucking nasty. "

She had no respect for the dead so why should we show her respect?

"Who has suggested £10 million for the funeral? It is a day of solemn reflection, for the family and friends and to remember a life. Have an opinion, yes, but show dignity and decorum. "

Your view and you are entitled to it.

Maybe look at how the Argentinians have handled this?

"Just shows how divisive the woman was and still is.

Shameful.

The country is still paying for her policies as it is.So lets just get her in the ground at any cost & be done with her.! "

Here here.

I refuse to celebrate someone's death. . . . . but good riddance.

Newcastle and Gateshead

actually... I was surprise at the way today has gone... it was very well done and a lot most respectful than I thought it would be.....

i was watching it on an american broadcast... and the americans still dont see what we do, but there were a few to put in some balance..

for example they don't get the applause as opposed to the silence...

O o O oo

I don't either.

I think it started when Diana had her funeral and I put it down to people wanting to do something as the coffin went past and they were not sure what so that was a spontaneous reaction.

"I doubt the Met will let anything kick off during the funeral. If there are 'disturbances' they'd be more likely to happen this evening in the aftermath.... after all, it's so much more fun to go looting Currys when the shop's shut, innit....

I walked along the strand and fleet st this morning. I must have passed 500 coppers

Krispy Kreme must be doing a roaring trade "

"i feel total compasion for those she left behind....but ive more compassion for the people and communties she destroyed. For the hurt and anguish she inflicted on the hard working people. For communities laid waste...she may be dead but the hurt she caused is still apparent to this day..

Hmm I wonder just what state the country would be in if she hadn't been PM. After all it was in a right shit state when she took office. Labour allowing the unions to run the country into the ground"

I'm not going to get involved with this thread but you need to read some facts before posting. Perhaps some economics books/ journals too.

I offered my bunch the chance to watch the funeral proceedings with my blessing, I had the TV left on in the tea room....anyone who wanted to was free to go in and watch for as much or as little as they wanted.

The only one of them who wandered into the tea room before lunch was my young Polish van driver, I went into make myself a coffee and found the git watching 'American Pickers' on the History channel instead of the bloody funeral!

I was pleasantly surprised how respectful the protests were in London on the whole.

A shame the same can't be said for Goldthorpe!!!

It makes me utterly ashamed to admit I was born in South Yorkshire!!
