After a week of trying to recoup money that's been scammed from my dad and getting no where. I've realised how incredibly easy it can be to be targeted. My dad isn't very tech savvy and kept the whole situation to himself.

I wondered if we could have a thread for scams to look out for. If it helps one family from going through the hell we've faced then it's worth it!

So, this scam was apple gift cards. They befriended him then over time slowly started mentioning money worries and before you know it they needed money for X y and z. Please post any scam methods that you're aware of below

Texts with a link to pay a parking fine. I get them every week or so. Usually with some form of threat to seize the car etc. Never legit, never click the link!

** As a rule any texts or emails around payments or bank details that contain direct links should be ignored.

** Messages from random phone numbers claiming to be a family that has "lost/broken" their phone is another scam.

Basically any email, text or phone call asking for any sort of money or offering a get rich quick scheme is a scam. Anyone saying they're from your banks fraud department or Microsoft. Anybody saying they are your daughter or son without giving a name.

We have told my dad to not believe anyone who contacts him unless he is 100% sure he knows who they are. We've managed to get him to understand that but he still got conned recently by someone purporting to be one of his friends who needed a £250 Apple pay card. Fortunately the bank froze his debit card but he kept quiet about it.

I'd add to that any young, good looking man or woman contacting you on social media saying they think you're very nice and would love to be your friend. Check the mirror first. Would a successful surgeon, military person, business man or woman in their mid forties be interested in the face that's looking back at you? If you can't honestly answer yes, it's a scam. If you can answer yes, it's still a scam.

Thank god they froze his card! My dad is usually so paranoid about internet security for example only using PayPal, checking for the secure padlock symbol etc.

But he decided he wanted to delve into social media, where he is completely blind. We often discuss the latest scams going round so we were all so shocked he'd fallen into the trap. He has now decided to remove all social media accounts, which I must say, I'm relieved about.

How old is your dad? Mine is 97. My mum got caught by the Microsoft scam twice. She'd forgotten about the first time.

Oh bless them both it's so awful! I think they have a rough idea who they are targeting before going in.

He's 52 so you kind of expect he'd be wise to not believe all he read on the internet but here we are.

^^ age is no barrier I'm afraid.

I've been kicking around the net since the late 90s early 2000s and I've seen and heard nearly every trick in the book. I'm also deeply cynical when it comes to approaches from strangers.

My parents are old school, they respect authority in the form of banks etc and if someone claimed to be their friend they'd believe them. My mum (she's passed away now) truly believed it was Microsoft on the phone and felt a certain pride that she was able to follow the instructions they gave her to install spy ware on her pc. 🤦.

We are at the stage with my dad that we check his internet history frequently because it's the only way to keep him safe.

Penalty charge tickets/notices that are posted to you using Gov.uk headed paper as well.

The letter says your cars been caught in a certain place , gives you a code to log onto the Gov website to pay your fine etc...

The code at the beginning should always match the council's area code for where the fine has been issued.

They don't match, so if you were to follow the link given to pay your so called fine they've scammed you.

I've received 3 so far for areas/places my car has never been to, after being issued with one genuine fine which I've been left off paying as it was their error and not mine due to a roadworks diversion being incorrect.

That’s actually a great group on fb about parking fines, they often post the scams going around. Also tips on what to do and how to fight it, it’s ran by a guy that takes a small fee (legit) and gets the tickets written off

Unpaid Parcel Delivery fee is one.

We sent parcels out a few months ago and was Also waiting on some Arriving so was almost Caught out.

Kink sent us to what seemed to be legit Evri Site.

We then went and rang the official Evri Contact Number and they had no clue what we was on about.

Not wholly online but more fraudsters are using QR codes at places like car parks, so that you scan what appears to be the official QR code and get sent to a fake lookalike website, to make payment for the service.

People who are often in a hurry, can inadvertently scan, think they've done the right thing, by paying for parking etc, but have just given away their money and payment details, which can be re-used, until all their money is gone.

Often, QR codes are sent in texts, pretending to be for parcels etc, to get you to click and them to harvest your personal details. It might even pretend to be from your bank, encouraging you to login and change your password, so that the scammers then have all of your details and money.

They will usually make it pressured, so that you feel compelled to do it straight away.

Be wary of both QR codes and text messages.

Autocorrupt has quite a sense of humour; also a good reason, among others, to look at Fabs in secret mode when on your phone...

I heard about the Apple card scam in some article where a woman working in the supermarket suspected something wasn't right and prevented the older person from getting scammed when they came in to buy the card.

It was good of her to recognise what was happening.

No idea, I'm lost. Damn Sat nav!

There’s a new scam where groups are set up and inviting you to join and watch the live stream of funerals, as we as pay donations by putting ur card details. It’s sick how low people are going and constantly coming up with new ways to con people. If you get an invitation to join such a group I would urge you to double check with the family then report it.

I've been getting texts recently about unpaid parking fines.

Also a woman I work with recently sent a Facebook message asking me to send her my phone number. I didn't. It turned out she'd been hacked and the she was caught out after a "message" from another profile asked for her number.

As Christmas approaches, lots of allegedly HMRC saying you have a tax refund, click on the link to claim. They tend to send them at the run up for Christmas, knowing people are going to be planning on spending for Christmas, and think...ooooh, wouldn't that refund be handy.

I actually got a scam text message today.

It claimed it was from Tiktok saying that I would be an ideal moderator and would get paid £200-£500 a day working from home.

My daughter's partner's parents got caught out earlier in the year by the Microsoft computer scam and gave fraudsters remote access to their computer. x

On a more serious note though, I would never click links on any texts even if they said my bank sent them or the HMRC etc. go onto to official website on a computer and verify how they would communicate before answering anything.

I had those penis enlargement ones, ones for tablets to make penis grow longer and also lots of females asking me to fk them. Sadly my penis didn't get enlarged either.
