Are you like me, someone that likes to sit down, relax and read a good book? That makes me wonder, what makes a good book that you want to read?

For me it is essential that it captures my attention and holds it throughout the entire story and afterwards it is not easily forgotten

Seriously though, good inventive writing goes a long way and can paper over cracks in the plot etc. Likewise a good story can make up for undercooked writing.

I like quite terse prose that gives the minimum of detail so your brain can fill in the gaps.

I just finished a Val McDermid book in which the plot was excellent and clearly well researched. All the characters were well drawn with the exception of one who was introduced in the second part of the book. That spoiled it a tiny bit

I love hard sci fi space opera stuff. Big fan of Allister Reynolds (some of his short stories are used in Netflixs Love, Death and Robots) but I enjoy a lot of short story compilations by various authors because you never know what youre going to get.

What makes a story good for me isn't just something like a hero's journey or a thrilling "who done it" but putting the story down and thinking a way you hadn't about something before which i find a lot of in sci fi.

I just put it down. Sometimes I will try it again late. My current favourite series took me 3 tries then I loved it.

I read detective stories mainly. Peter James and Jeffory Deaver mostly. A good book is when you finish a chapter and its late and you should be going to sleep but just have to read a bit more. A few more pages...
