Same as with any scam dude, they are very clever and convincing ‘people’ who prey on weaknesses. I guess if someone forms an emotional attachment and wants them badly enough they’ll do whatever.

They rely on vulnerable who are lonely, on social media I get loads of widowed American soldiers or doctors trying reply to comments I've made on public posts.

They hope someone will bite and add them as a friend then they give them so stories.

Plus I've read that once you've been successfully scammed, you're put on a list or your info is passed to other Scammers too. Very callous.

I think some woman wish for love Some men are into manipulating someone into questioning their own sanity - can be a common technique to cheat people out of their money,

This anguish takes a huge toll on their mental and physical health, they're often guilt-tripped with lines like, "If you truly loved me, you would not question why I need this amount of money so quickly," or "You said before that you wanted to help me, what's changed?"

Romance scams are "particularly insidious" because they play on the basic desire for love and connection.

I can understand be scammed out of say £20 - £50 but when it’s over £5000 and in many cases a lot more than £5000 I don’t get it.There is a saying a fool is easily parted from their money and sorry to say but to me that is how some of these men and women come across to me as fools.

Loneliness, flattery, attention, the chance of love.

My parents knew a woman who lost everything to a Cypriot waiter she met on holiday shortly after she was widowed.

My mum tried many times to talk to her about it but all she would say was "you don't know what it's like to be lonely".

I don't understand how people fall for it (plenty of men do too) but I've never been in their position.

I've been approached on Facebook by very good looking men in their 40s who are American military officers of very high rank or surgeons. It's clear to me from the off that it's a scam but when I report them Facebook says they're genuine. 🤷‍♀️

Scammers usually target those who are vulnerable and spend months if not years working the scam on them.

Problem is, the heart wants what it desires and for some, romance is what they want. The only thing we can do is continue to educate, look for the warning signs and question when money is brought up early in a conversation.

. As mature adults with a brain surely you feel that transferring overs £1000’s and you have only ever met the person a couple of times face to face if at all something is not right.

I've been quite lucky in that my suitors have been very attractive. I was tempted to play along but in the end I couldn't be bothered.

The thing is the message they send is quite flattering and if you're feeling vulnerable and the mirror shows a version of you that you don't particularly like it must be a bit tempting. I'm lucky 8 can get all the faux flattery I need by posting a couple of nudes on here

I didn't get messages, just random friend requests (which are denied and blocked!)

But yes, I can imagine how the initial contact can be very tempting.

^^ the messages usually follow a similar pattern. They tell you how pretty you are, first warning sign, nobody my age is pretty that's for children and teenagers, women of my age are beautiful or attractive. They go on to say how much they'd like to be you friend and how interesting you seem.

It's really easy to spot that they're scammers *if* you know what you're looking for and your heart isn't crying out for company.

There are massive complexes abroad, where armies of men and women are held captive and forced to ensnare and defraud people of huge sums of money. Often the most tragic and desperate people, scammed out of their life savings and pushed to take out big debts. It defies logic, much of the scam stories that are spun but these are criminal masterminds that have the expertise to do it and the typical perpetrators have no freedom and so are under immense pressure themselves, potentially with threats of lives being taken of their families

There was news this week that banks are to be allowed to delay payment processing times to upto 4 working days, when they are suspicious. Perhaps even longer delays for more payments made would be appropriate. Though too many of us want everything to be instant today.

I had a friend who got done..

Before I'd met her she'd transferred money to some guy to buy his plane ticket out of Russia or Africa or somewhere to come and see her. Was a scam out of Nigeria I think. She said it wasn't so much the money... As how dreadful she felt afterwards knowing she'd been scammed. Having said that she also lost her house and home to her ex when he divorced her so maybe she was doing something wrong.

Tv show love rats was a fascinating watch on this kind of thing, it’s shocking the lengths they go to and the manipulation tricks used that part people with their money, so many intricately engineered ways that they do it too, and they always prey on the same type of person, the ones that always try to see the best in others, one woman on there ended up losing over 100k before she had realised what was happening and she’d been had.

I read that the bigger the fraud the more likely someone will accept the lie. A 20 quid fraud is much more likely to be spotted than a 20K one. I can’t rent er what the reason was though.
