Reports that a cyclist is in a very critical state. My sympathies are with the individual but FFS how can you be very critical?

"Reports that a cyclist is in a very critical state. My sympathies are with the individual but FFS how can you be very critical? "

Because there is a journalist who likes adjectives and making things exciting.

"My sympathies are with the individual but....."

Why does there need to be a but? Someone is critically injured. Isn't that enough?

That’s a remarkably specific grumble! 😆

I know what you mean OP, I get so close to calling people out for saying things like quite brilliant.

But I don’t.

I believe his point is that the word critical shouldn’t be subject to gradation. Either they’re critical or they’re not, they can’t be very critical or slightly critical or mediumly critical.

Not entirely sure it’s worth starting a forum thread over, though.

Doubtless, but critical is critical. You can't be very critical, incredibly critical, a little critical...a journalist should be better than this

Brighton - even Hove!

What if they had written ‘ever so critical’ or ‘super critical’ or ‘hyper-mega critical’ ?

I’m not camp, a tad older. I’ve got quite a distinctive accent which ain’t Brightonian.

Critical is critical! You might as well say something is incredibly dead!

Your last sentence reminded me of the scene in Alice in Wonderland when she is talking to the Mad Hatter.

The Continental

Sadly, since these posts. It has been announced that the cyclist has since succumbed to her injuries and died in hospital.
