The gentleman who trained Tom Cruise for The Last Samurai was a gentleman called John Waller who was a Fight Director .

John Waller (fight director)

John Waller (12 August 1940 – 20 April 2018) was an English pioneer of the historical European martial arts (HEMA) revival, a fight director for stage, screen and spectacle, and a teacher of martial arts. John used to work for the Royal Armouries Museum at the same time I worked there as a volunteer gallery host .

Two films come to mind...

Happiness, by Todd Solondz.

A film about desperate, sad, lonely, sometimes horrific people, all looking for something to make them a bit happier.

Very uncomfortable viewing but also very funny and weirdly touching. It has one of the best opening scenes ever, and it perfectly sets the tone of everything that follows.

Bad Boy Bubby, by Rold de Heer.

An abused, mentally underdeveloped man wanders out into the outside world after being locked up by his in-cest-uous mother for 35 years. Loads of bad stuff happens then the ending pulls the rug from under you. Think of it as "It's A Wonderful Life" as directed by David Lynch.

Just call me Barry Norman 😁
