couple, us we him her.

Are you "to the manor born"?

Born with a silver spoon in your mouth never really had to worry about money and knows what cutlery to use at a banquet.

.....

Hyacinth Bucket.

Grounded in the realms of middle class and have delusions of grandeur?

.......

The Boswell's ( working class family from the sitcom bread)

Definitely working class, hard working and don't expect hand outs respectful but love a good night out at the local workingman's club?

.....

Wayne and Waynetta slob, never done a day's work in your life and expect the government to keep you?

Don't know a spoon from a fork

......

Or

I don't see class I'm too cool for all that right on mkay, peace and love x

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

I hail from what in the U.S.A. is called a blue collar background.

Both parents were (still are!) very frugal. I grew up without extravagance or high levels of creature comforts. I never had want for any basic needs however.

I'll blame my parents for being such a tightwad with myself😅🤣

I was brought up in an upper-middle class environment from hard-grafting parents who came from poverty.

I am grateful for everything they did, but it was very hard to keep up at school with spoiled brats who were just used to luxury. I never had nice clothes to wear to birthday parties haha. And I was excluded from most things. But my education was elite, and I have my folks to thank for that.

Now, I’d say we are middle class. But ai make a point to not let my children take things for granted or to be entitled.

Very much grew up working class. Both parents owning a corner shop that my siblings and I would work in after school and on weekends but would say I'm creeping into middle class due to where I live now and the job that I have but fully appreciate that what I have now wouldn't have been possible without the work my parents put in when I was younger.

I’m an outrageous snob but with no right to be. I come from lower middle class stock and was raised with high standards, many of which I choose when to apply according to my own agenda. I look down on and judge everyone but have but just try to live as well as I can with the nicest things I can afford.

I regularly observe, listen to or read people and think “Urgh.”

I hate upper class nonsense and pretensions. The level I’m at is perfect and is where everyone in the nation should be. I may start up my own training courses.

Haha! No, I've never had a butler etc...but I do come from a wealthy family who owned lots of mills in the Industrial Revolution so I am very fortunate that I have never had to worry about money. Something I have never taken for granted though. Class is such an odd concept really that I only use for a comedic (well... I think I'm a bit unusual were class and culture mix. Raised on a council estate to working class parents who both had a basic state school education. Yet both of them very cultured and worldly. My mother knew all the etiquette of high society for my Grandma who'd worked in service from childhood to start of the war in one of the big stately homes and in upper middle class town houses. So my Mum was always knowledge of these practices and great with her massive vocabulary and grammar (which as a dyslexic was often lost on me). She was always very strick on things being done correctly. My dad was from a very poor broken home. He had a hard upbringing. He was honestly one of the most smartest men I've ever met and always had an insatiable thrist for knowledge and exploration. He moved in some expeditioning circles and through that he made great freinds with a mix of people including Lords and British Army Officers who were incredibly posh and also incredibly good men. I know that also enriched his understanding of the world and cultural knowledge. He likewise passed on to me great wisdom and importance of questioning the world. As well as lots of knowledge.

So here I am a working class male from a council estate with the knowledge and cultural capital that enables me to feel at ease and engage in conversations in well to do and circles. To know which way to pass the Port, to select the correct cutlery for correct course/dish, to talk about culture (and more importantly to understand what others are talking about). Yet I am not posh, neither do I wish to be. Neither am I educated at a University level. I can also I swear like a trooper, apprentice a good working mens club and the joys of a proper greasy spoon cafe. My application of language is not posh, neither is my voice. However in terms of terminology (bar the expletives) and the nature of my conversational range my cultural wealth still comes through.

So no I am not posh but perfectly comfortable to be around in posh circles without being a fish out of water. But I'd much prefer to be in a greasy spoon or a knees up in the British Legion any day.

Mr

Oh just on a side note on the current situation in society class, culture and wealth is being turn on its head more than ever. Especially as we see the middle class being evaporated as wealth defies gravity and trickles upwards strait to the top %. We now have lots of our youth educated at a University level. We have lots of very cultured middle income earners who are now struggling to even pay the mortgage. A whole load of people who are in essence and culturally posh but haven't got the finances meet the material needs of being posh. Will this culture survive the material starvation over time or will be become a society of simple poor and the 1%?

Will this culture survive the material starvation over time or will be become a society of simple poor and the 1%?"

What a delightful and insightful post!

"Only in the UK are people so restricted by issues surrounding class

Not really many countries are engrained in a class culture India's cast system has been in place for centuries."

It’s not a class system as in the UK

Also it was introduced by the British

Class shouldn’t be confused with having money although in the past if you had money you were generally considered upper class or aristocratic- that doesn’t apply any more

Class these days is more about education, having social graces, your mannerisms, the vocabulary you use

A class system is also a strong barrier to social mobility in a country

"I’m Welsh.

You’re never Welsh AND posh. "

True, they say an Englishman will ask a fellow Englishman pretty early on - what do you do for a living? (code for what's your social standing) , whilst a Welshman will ask a Welshman where are you from?

The Obsession with class in this country is getting old and tiresome.

Formalised by British colonisation maybe, but since it existed over there since 1500 bc I'm not buying that they introduced it 💜

1. Mug.

2. Neither, the caretaker looks after the grounds.

3. Hold it until I'm out of the shower.

So am I officially posh or not?

1. Tea from a cup, coffee from a mug - I have never called either a "brew".

2. petrol sit-on.

3. A wee in the shower is acceptable, if alone.

I am 27 and I live in London. I don’t have a lawn. I have debt.

I ALWAYS sit on the toilet before a shower just in case.
