I call people who use 'lol' 'lollards'.

Yes,I do know that Lollards were followers of a religious persuasion and had little to laugh about but probably shared lots of love.

Until a few decades ago it was fairly common to see 'LOL'in family letters. Note the use of capitals, standards were higher then.

Lolling around has always been a lazy activity. Despite being a naturally bone idle person, I dislike the usage as I am not given to crowd following.

In nearly all cases, a simple exclaimation mark conveys the sentiment adequately!
