Before you just googled it, were you aware of who the Bevin Boys are/were?

Morning!

Doesn't surprise me that the younger generation wouldn't know about the Bevin Boys. I was chatting to a woman in her mid-twenties last week who wasn't 100% sure who fought in the second world war.

I knew about conscripted miners, but didn't know they were called Bevin Boys.

Does that ruin your survey? Sorry

I can understand people not knowing who the Bevin Boys were, they were forgotten about by the government for 50 years.

But not knowing who actually fought is slightly different

A Bevin boy was someone who declined to be called up for military service, but did something as equally important as going down a coal mine.

All Bevin Boys were conscripted and had no choice, most wanted to do military service.

conscientious objectors were also sent down the mines, but these were separate from the Bevin Boys

Just to correct you slightly there

You are not. I was just curious as everyone I ask in the real world has no idea, so was expanding my sample size

"A Bevin boy was someone who declined to be called up for military service, but did something as equally important as going down a coal mine. "

Actually, Bevan Boys were part of the call up process, but every 10th call up number was diverted from the armed forces to work in the pits. It was not a Conscientious objection option.

Some were accused of being cowards, or draft dodgers, because they weren't in uniform, but they had no option but to go down the mines, unless on medical grounds.

Durham

Yes met a gent once who in his youth was one of the beven boys moved from london to work in the pits in Durham.

He got a white feather because people thought he was a coward.

It wasn't till years later that people realised the beven boys had no choice to be on or not.
