A little appreciation......

In my job as a drainage engineer I get see everything. I can get back to base covered in all the lovely stuff you'd expect from blocked drains, manholes and chambers.

There are many men and women in fabland that will be in the same boat yet as I dot about town in me tanker I can't help but think we're a little under appreciated and used as an example to kids, that if you don't stick in at school you'll be like him.

Does anyone notice this with their line of work or am I just getting tetchy over bugger all?

Do you have kids?

My kid see's guys driving trucks and think they are legends.

If the trucks do stuff like pump or spray then even better.

I don't think most people look down on hard working folk. Most people are hard working.

Some people*do* think less of people who do jobs like yours op. That's because they don't understand.

Most of us will need a drain clearance person at some point in our lives many fewer will need a brain surgeon or astrophysicist

God no, I appreciate all of the workers that do jobs most people won't. Without hardworking people like you, working in sewage and drainage, we're all up to our necks in shite.

I used to do environmental drilling when I was younger, using tracked rigs. Contamination testing, mostly. Not quite the same sector, but it was bloody messy and smelly at times. Especially drilling in chalk. Still laugh at how caked we used to get, when the water pressure built up and shot out of the augers. It was insane!

I think people do with my job (aviation security) until I talk about some of the different functions within the role.

However, I know I’m saving the skies from acts of terror, one tray at a time

Seriously though, OP, I have no practical skills in any area of life and I rely completely on those that do. Much respect to anyone in roles like yours.

Nah my kids wanted to be farmers at one point so they could drive a slurry tankers. Explained to them what happens when there's a blockage. They then had to ring their grandad to ask if it happend to him. Found out yes it did, they still wanted a slurry tanker
