Isn't it amazing how a little bit of absolute silence is so calming to the human body.

Even ma pc is making a "I'm overheating kind of noise", my clock will start tweeting at me shortly,(I have a birdie clock) then someone else's dog usually starts yapping around 6 o'clock

What is the value of silence to you?

I love it especially at work it means no volunteers no guests and no magic radio! I can sit and relax with my book before the guests want to start getting up at 6am.

I used to work nights upgrading telecoms cabinets in the street and it was lovely working away in what would be usually noisy busy roads during the day but at 2am there wasn't a soul around and very few cars. I wouldn't say it was dead clam and silent but it was nice. What was even nicer was driving home from wherever just as dawn was breaking and you are on the motorway and there are very few cars around - and even less coppers - and you can put your foot down and go as fast as you like in the soft morning light of dawn. I miss that.

I love it especially when I arrive home from work, with only the pets for company.

The cat greets me as I get out of the car, and demands to be fed.

The dog is just happy to see me and bounces around the place.

The sound of happy pets tucking into their food is very soothing and relaxing.

It will be the only sound in the house until I turn on the TV. Bliss!

Love going out to walk the dog when there is no one about.

Love sitting by the tent to watch the world go by in silence.

One of the many reasons I decided to call this country my home is the ability to switch off completely, as I found life in the Far East where I grew up to noisy and hectic.

Surely there can be calm and silence in any country somewhere, as also there can be chaos and people just doing everyday things.

I don't pertain to be the Dalai Lama, but even breaks at work can be stressful sometimes. Too many people using mobile phones, showing each other the latest you tube video or whatever.

Can we ever switch off and relax without having to go and sit on a hilltop in a far and distant country

You can achieve silence within yourself wherever you are :deep:. But being somewhere outside with only birdsong is so calming and uplifting I must be an old hippy lol

I love sitting in the back garden early morning , cup of coffee in hand listening to birds and their morningchorus before reality sets in and into mum mode!

Best relaxing silence I ever had was when stayed in a cottage in yorkshire.

Up at 7am into an enclosed garden and into the hottub with a cup of coffee

Mmm so silent and relaxing :D

living on a narrowboat on the canal is brilliantly silent at most times, i wake to hear the blackbird and sleep to the hoot of the resident barn owl inbetween the silence, blissful way of life and sooo relaxing

Lovely! We lived on a fairly remote farm years ago and those were the only noises we heard apart from the animals. We used to like the darkness too, no street lights, no houses.

I wouldn't like absolute silence though, just quiet with natural noises.

Have spent a few nights out in the desert, no light except for thousands of stars and no sound, not even insects. I found all I could hear was a bit of tinnitus. Its amazing.

Great thread - made me think!

I love being "busy", enjoy socialising, like being challenged 99% of the time and hardly ever sit still for any length of time.

But every now and again, I feel the need for real silence, real calm! It is so therapeutic.
