The word banter normally precedes heinous and ill timed poor humour, best avoided, British sarcasm and dry wit should be heard acknowledged and if funny, laughed at in proportion to the joke but ‘banter’ is akin to a racist saying ‘I’m not being racist but…. (Insert whatever racist statement’ it’s just poor use of English and an excuse for a shitty statement of ill informed untruth

Ps I’m not labeling race per se, sexism is the brunt of the majority of ‘banter’ jokes and there’s just no need, if you can’t say anything nice (funny) say fuck all

I exchange this type of banter with my dad and brothers and a coup!e of my friends. I don't think any of us would do it with strangers because they wouldn't understand and we do don't know each other well enough

I find it differs from person to person, but overall I've been fairly lucky with finding people who don't mind how I talk or when I test the limits of what I can get away with.

I don't pretend to be somebody else or hide shitty comments behind the premise of banter. It seems some people do though.

I think that's just systemic of anonymous (albeit semi or complete) online interaction. It appears to be breeding certain types who just say whatever they want and don't take responsibility for their words and/or actions.

It's not about people being offended more easily. I feel it's more about a large portion of online communities not having a decency filter anymore.

But that's obviously my own observations and whether or not they are true is entirely subjective.

There's plenty of banter.

But consent is a thing. I'll happily share banter etc with good friends but that respect is earned.

Similarly, humour has moved on. We understand how a lot of old stereotypes are used to entrench harmful myths, actively harm or just bully people who are different.

We don't see a lot of the humour from 70s stand-up anymore because the victims don't have to pretend to enjoy being laughed at, insulted or condescended to.

Same as a lot of people like 'banter' think it's hilarious until they're the ones on the actual receiving end.

Also, problematic humour is often fine so long as we acknowledge the humour is problematic and the person making the joke isn't painted as the hero.

eg Archer. Archer uses a load of deeply inappropriate humour, but it works in the modern context precisely because Archer is an idiot.

Same with people laughing at Trump, JD Vance etc.

Or watching Laurence Fox dig themselves into a deeper and deeper hole.

It's all about knowing your audience. There are topics of banter I would bring up with friends that I would never bring up with strangers because friends know how far we can take it. People aren't easily offended, but hopefully they're more mindful and k ow how far to things with what they say.

It's sort of been alluded to here but not stated obviously but I think mood and emotion have a great part to play in being able to differentiate banter from insult / bullying.

Like Nanna, my childhood culture is to be able to freely express your moods and thoughts to communicate with others and get through the day.

In more light hearted moments people could display their intelligence and wit with the quips they used about each other and life and all would laugh.

Times were human and open.

I see it as simple social behaviour being swept up , and dumped into the wrong filing cabinet with all the 'isms'.

I like nothing more than being amongst 'my own' taking off my socially acceptable mask .......being where the banter is base and real. It's uniting and comforting and doesn't involve insulting or inciting othering along any line.

^^^^^ definitely this - good witty banter you know who your teasing it with and its backwards and forwards not one way. Banter with a stranger, well unless flirtatious, can be viewed as picking and can make them uncomfortable. How would you know they were enjoying your 'banter' if you didnt really know then a little bit.

Written word is often difficult to interpret - your mood and frame of mine will change context, you have to assume the intent.
