Ding dong the witch is dead, is at number 3 in the music charts. But, radio 1 and polititions are now saying this song should not get played over the air.

My question is this, should these polititions now get involved in what we buy or listen to? Isn't it our right to free speech? Or will they now ban 'the wizard of oz' from our screens as well?

I am disgusted at the way the Tories are using this as a vote catching exercise. 10 days of debate? What for? The woman is dead.

I am disgusted at the cost of the funeral. Money spent on this could be given to homeless shelters, for example.

But I am also disgusted with the attempt to get this single in the charts. I am certainly glad the woman is gone but I also do not see how this can possibly affect her. The only people hurt are her family. My mother died just 2 years ago. I just imagine how I would feel about it.

Certainly people have the right to voice their opinions - like Glenda Jackson, as an example, though there are others. But this seems to show no respect for those who will be genuinely grieving.

The woman is dead - let's bury her and move on.

I used it only as an example. I appreciate that she has a platform. Her opinion was measured not vindictive, however. Like I said the woman is dead - it's over. Let's bury her and forget her. That's the best legacy we can leave.

While I don't agree with all the bile being spouted about Maggie (she did a great job in my _iew) the pop charts are a factual record of sales in that industry so I see no reason to Ban it. Of course, there is the aspect of her family's feelings.

My way of thinking is this. We've had all these 'politicians' saying how good Thatcher was for the country and how much she will be missed. By buying this song, it is the small mans/womens way of saying "No she wasn't, and she won't be missed". It is the ONLY way the man/woman in the street can have a voice.

I think Margaret Thatcher herself would have disagreed in the BBC banning its playing. She was very much for the freedom of speech .

Thatcher came to power in May 1979 after a poster campaign by Saatchi & Saatchi showing a huge line of jobless benefit claimants and in bold lettering it said "LABOUR IS'NT WORKING. That was when one million people were claiming unemployment benefit. Thatcher increased that number to 3.5 million, after selling off the countries silver (all the utility companies and a lot more besides)

Yep!

I'd rather people bought this, listened to it once and then had their 60 seconds of enjoyment than had a riot, burned a few cars and caused chaos in the streets as they did the other night in Bristol.

Someone spending 99p on a crap tune will have no negative impact on anything but their own ears - rather than those living in their communities that don't share their opinions!

To me - pointless, disrespectful and a waste of a quid that could be better spent. But each to their own.

My radios all have off switches!

I find the idea of people wanting to play it very distasteful, just as I have found distasteful the general feeling that it has been acceptable to celebrate her death. It to me is along the same lines as those “people” who go and picket at the funerals of soldiers and gay people due to their beliefs.

However, I also believe in allowing it to be played if it does reach the top spot.

It says more about the people who have campaigned to get it there than it does about her.

I Hope that her family can rise above it and act with the dignity that befits the occasion.

This one is thankful to Mrs T...I did a YTS scheme out of college, owned my own home since I was 18, never been out of work apart from a sabbatical after I took voluntary redundancy, worked in big industries in the north (yes they still exist)and still earning a bloody good wage all these years later...I'll raise my glass to Lady Thatcher anytime, and numpties buying daft records for the sake of a dig - go ahead, waste your money - Sex Pistols' God Save The Queen didn't bring the monarchy down, I doubt whether a wee jingle from the Wizard of Oz will ruin the memory of Mrs Thatcher's legacy

It's hypocritical to have a music chart system that places the No.1 song on sales - but not if the establishment doesn't like the song.

This song has been promoted by anarchist groups but the people who buy this sort of twaddle are kids with mobile phones who revel in having a song that is 'decadent' - it's cool to be rude, and it's not an indication of how many people hated Thatcher but more of an indication of the sheep-like mentality of the people who have bought this piece of 'music'.
