In the current economic climate do you find that you look beyond brands and buy the supermarket's own version as it is cheaper?

I have been doing this for years. Unless the supermarket one is just no good, I never buy brands and I save a fortune.

I buy some own brands , but some are just a no no. I'm quite lucky as I work a lot of hrs so can eat at work so don't do much shopping.

I agree some are definitely a no no! I've tried a variety of dishwasher tabs but the only ones which really work are the leading brand. I have to buy the same branded washing powder - tried so many others and I end up with rashes.

Strangely though shampoos and shower gels can be any brand - but perhaps, they are not so harsh. I buy little packet/tinned stuff anyway. A lot of my food is fresh.

I think it was martin lewis (the money expert guy) who said start at the cheapest, and work until you find the level that works for commonly bought products.

Good tip for dishwasher tablets - tescos everyday value ones - about £1.75 for 30 are fantastic - better than the brands if you ask me (but we don't need to worry about limescale up here - don't know if that makes a difference)

I only pick up bits from Sainsbury's that I cannot or do not want to get from Aldi. Large bottles of Becks from there are currently £1.49 but are £2.65 in the Co op.

Sorry, didn't mean limescale - I mean calcuim in the water - hard water - it killed kettles at a scary rate when I lived down in manchester. I found it had an impact on the detergents I used.

Yes Aldi is good these days... bananas are just 68p a pack - half the price of other supermarkets. Their meat is cheaper and better quality than tesco.... and it's not horse meat either.

They do some lovely cooked meats and Bratwurst! Those brattis are exactly the same as the ones you get in Germany - I know because I have shopped in Aldi in Germany. They are exactly the same brand.

I love Aldi or Lidal they do great _ruit and veg range and agree re the brattis and fricadela

Yes a lot of the cooked meat is german and I've bought sliced sausages and they are exactly same.

I wasn't offended! LOL We get our water from the reservoirs in the Pennines. Down south can be really hard water. Friend of mine lived in Hampshire and she had to filter her water before she used it. Even then a cup of tea tasted disgusting to me. No wonder they prefer coffee in hard water areas. Might be different now as this was a few years ago.

Im in Hampshire and dont really mind the water maybe Ive just been acustomed to it lol used to have a filter kettle but the cartridges cost a fortune lol so got rid n bought a normal one lol

Thing is that a lot of people turn their nose up at Aldi. The Germans would think of us as strange to do so - it is a leading supermarket there and the layout there is identical as here! No fancy shelving, etc.

In fact, I am about to do a chilli - all Aldi bought - in a bit for tonight!

All my toiletries and cleaning stuff is branded. Simply because i stock up on it all when its on offer in wilkinsons. Each week they have a stand where things are either 90p or £1 this week its flash products and cant remember which but one of the shower gels so i just stock up, over a period of time the offers come up for what we all use.

Food items, i dont really buy a lot of packet tinned stuff, i have recently changed to basic porridge and the middle priced baked beans, always buy the cheap tinned tomatos and kidney beans. There was a time when i would only buy branded, but times change

Toiletries - branded and what I have been using for years

Make up - a few brands

Cleaning products - don't care to much, whatever I know works best regardless of price.

The list could go on and on and shall stop there

There's not much in the way of independents round here - the market is saturated with big supermarkets and a lot of local shops I used to use are gone now, sadly. Also, I have very little time to shop around that much. So, much of my shopping is done in a supermarket.

I too look for offers - and usually buy in bulk where I can. I have used Costco for a lot of products too - bought almost a year's supply of washing stuff and cleaning stuff last time - still using some of it! But you have to be prepared for a large initial layout and it doesn't pay for at least a year.

Being a single mum it means I only have a certain amount of money coming in so am careful with what I buy all the time x

Normally have stuff delivered, hate supermarket shopping with a passion!

However I will 100% support the butcher (which I travel to and is 2 villages away to stock up) who not only has quality but affordable and accessible.

For eg yesterday I went to the butchers I got:

1kg braising steak

1kg mince beef (I can only remember the price of this specifically £5 much cheaper than supermarket and better quality)

6 rashes of bacon

4 big pieces of belly pork

1 cauliflower

Red Onion

White Onion

Sliced Roast Beef

Cabbage

Mushrooms

Baby New Potatoes

That came to £30 and will make several meals.

There is only one good butcher near me and he is quite pricey to be honest. There is a lovely cheese shop - they do a lot of deli stuff too - but again pricey.

I prefer to actually shop myself rather than have things delivered. Bit old-fashioned but it's what I prefer.
