I’ve just spent the last 2 days on a mental health first aid course.

Wow is all I can say. What an eye opener for me on the whole subject and the constant problem it is to still receive support

Thankfully it would seem now that many companies are now seeing this as not an issue but something that needs to be respected and things put in place to help deal with it.

There are some amazing charities both nationally and locally that can and hopefully will support people

Please everyone look after those around you and most importantly yourself and let’s remove the stigma that is attached to it

As a mental health first aider and someone who writes wellbeing articles and courses it's sad that suicide is now the biggest killer of men under the age of 50 in the UK...

Well done for completing it

Wish I believed companies understand it better

When I spoke to mine was told the answer was to get religion in my life

I'd like it more if companies didn't just see it as a box-ticking exercise. I've seen plenty of colleagues get "put in the back office" because they've spoken out about it, which then leads to others not speaking out. Or my personal experience of being chinned off by medical staff when criming up personal concerns 🙄

I think it’s very easy to come off courses like this with all good intent and promises. I need to now think on how I bring this in to the work place where it is embraced and seen as a positive and actually follow it through

I think the suicide rate shows that people are falling through the gaps in the system at a higher rate than ever. When a mental crisis occurs it's very hard to get the appropriate treatment unless you can go private x

It's brilliant that these courses exist. The more people who attend them and learn how to talk to someone who is struggling the better.

The hardest thing about speaking up is the fear of being met with dismissal and invalidation. The worst reaction I've received was an awkward laugh and a swift change of subject. The best was "That's really shit. How can I help".

It's great that businesses are investing in their staff and raising visibility

Still a long way to go, but everything starts somewhere... And hopefully it starts to have a positive impact ❤️

The system really is not fit for purpose!! To little availability! Too long are the waiting times,, all too little too late! Companies call themselves proactive but in reality it's just a check box exercise! Most companies don't give a crap about an employee with mental health issues as it effects the productivity and given the chance would rather get rid of they could! Most GP surgeries now out source thier mental health support and the NHS children's mental health services are deplorable!

This. Exactly this.

I've not been in a good place for the last 3 months, and I'm in the middle of clashing with both my employer (since they're the cause) and the NHS (since they're proving absolutely useless).

Needless to say, it's a pointless battle that I won't win, which is aggravating my condition even more.

Disgraceful.

I heard a phrase a couple of years ago. I don’t particularly like sayings or things but it was

“If we don’t provide support for mental health it will become the new cancer to the nhs”

11 million days of work was lost last year of work and that does not include those that may have said it was something else or continues to work

For me, and only me, I have not done this course to just do a course. It’s a start point. I know when I was dealing with some stuff someone talked me off the “ledge” many times and if by doing it I can make a difference to one person then it’s been so worthwhile

It is still on the whole new for companies. Is it the best place to be done?

Arguably not. Would you go to your line manager without fear of it being used against you

Would you go to a colleague in fear of ridicule

The bottom line, for me, is we need to do better. Remove the stigma attached to it and have the ability to have open conversations at friends and family and work level of how we are feeling and what we can do

Amazing, OP. Nice one for taking understanding mental health that one step further. 😊

I'm neurodivergent (ADHD) and it's surprising what some research and learning did to improve my own situation. Spent a couple of months looking at this and that. Behaviours, triggers, other conditions that are often paired with ADHD, coping mechanisms and support tools.

It all made such a difference. And through that, I also understand other people's ADHD lives too, which is fantastic.

There are so many conditions, with so many stigmas attached to them.

Knowledge truly is power and the more people who understand mental health, surely the better the world will be for so many.
