Car going in for its MOT

She is not old, well maintained and looked after. However, it still makes me nervous when I put cars in for their annual check up!

Are you the same?

Nah....just the thought of being ripped off cos I'm not mechanically minded. In sure I've seen the same brake pads allegedly off my car for years

Mine was in last week and cost was 2,600 so Wasn't a happy bunny using my 2nd car more now cos of running cost are far less

Put mine in last week, got a call 1hr later to say it passed Bot even a bulb change lol!!!! Must be the most honest garage ever lol!!!

Nah doesn't bother me and to be honest this is the first time in a while I have had a car old enough to need a MOT and where I am responsible for it!

So I took my car in last October and they said it needed a couple of tyres and brake pads, they are only a testing centre and don't do any work, however I just smiled sweetly and they got the tyres delivered and fitted and a mechanic to do the work and I collected my car later that day, that is what I call service

You girls are Lucky flash a snow and flutter those lashes and us guys go weak at the knees to assist, I do my own repairs but these newer cars with there array of sensors still need to go in sometimes for the fault diagnosis to rest them now that's a rip off, my car passed mot last month with no probs but has cost me a fortune in bits this last year

Yeah I always get nervous and I don't know why .

We go to a man who only does MOT's though, and although the car is fairly new so shouldn't need anything done to it, he doesn't have a vested interest to fail it.

not true a lot of the most heard of garages see a woman and try to rip us off because they think we know nothing about cars.

had one company tell me they had changed the struts on a car of mine (this was what was needed)and were charging me £200 for the pleasure - however when i checked them they hadn't changed them only turned the mounting upside down on one of them to increase the noise.

i went back a few days later and it was another guy who checked it and came back saying the struts needed changing.

when i asked for the manager and told him it had supposedly been done 4 days earlier by them and showed receipts he was very flustered and apologetic - i was refunded and made sure i had the "new struts" replaced properly free of charge!!!

No usually - unless I know there is a definite problem. Last MOT was January and I was told that it was 'like new'. Not bad considering it is an 07 plate.

I keep getting told my '96 Grey Import Japanese Campervan is like new too at every MOT... as a Mechanic it never fails and not because I'm in the trade and I get favours, it's because I look after it, which is the essence of why the test is there. Sadly, many folks need a car and beat them up as they skip on servicing due to insurance and fuel costs, this obviously gives grounds not to move to the 2 year MOT as on the continent.

Not normally too worried, take three cars a year there, the younger is nearly 13, the oldest is 41 this year. Tend to give them a once over before to make sure all the lights work and fix the rest as it happens.

How much? either a really expensive car with costly tyres or too dangerous to drive, Or, you were ripped off!

i only get nervous as sadly i dont have hundreds spare in the bank each month.. i do try and save but things come up.

i always fear getting a massive bill as there are no finance option for paying for the MOT/SERVICE.. think the most expensive MOT i had was around £600

Had my last car since 2003, and it never failed an MOT, was serviced every year and if anything needed doing it was done, I'm not one for scrimping on my car, I need to know its safe to drive at all times, not worth the risk

Absolutely spot on as the police, vosa, dvlc and insurance companies all know whether the car is MOT'd without even seeing the certificate. It's only used for police documentation production (pointless as they know already)post office road duty renewal (because post office cant be arsed to look it up electronically), non internet insurance renewal (same as post office) and for the customer (as people like to have some physical proof in their hand).

just had 1 today fail misrably (kind of expected as its been laid up for 3 months)

and my daily has no hope of going through another test (in my ownership), unless the tester is blind.

£140 this year. Not to bad at that. The issue is to keep up on the maintainence. If you don't, it will bite you in the arse(not an unpleasant feeling, lol) once a year...especially on older models.

hubby has an account with Kwik shit, went last week for 2 new tyres for my Rav £250 fitted bill came in this week and its gone up to £258, be back in Sunday morning when the manager is back off his hols
