Somewhere In The Ether…

Not literally mind.

Anyhoo, good folks - ey up again 😃

Now, please rate your skills in DIY here.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Are you adept at decorating? Plumbing? Carpentry?

Alternatively, perhaps you are completely clueless and draw a blank when confronted with the task of wiring an electrical plug?

It’s all good - no one will judge you (much….)

Pray tell please do reveal all (and possibly have a good old fashioned boast if it floats your boat) here 😃👍🏻

My skills - 0

I am so lazy when it comes to DIY that I don’t do it myself. I’d rather pay someone that enjoys the job, to do it for me.

I can do most stuff that you are legally allowed to do but I don't have anywhere inconspicuous enough to practice plastering so I leave that to the professionals.

I used to be good at DIY. When we bought our first house, the interweb didn't exist and I learnt everything from plumbing to electrics from a huge book called the Reader's Digest DIY manual. These days, I'm an expert at paying someone else to do it.

Paper Town Central, Essex.

I've built a house (3 actually) and did every trade at least twice. Got a gas engineer to check my work over obvs.

Dismantled and re built angines and gearboxes from Minis to Land rovers and even F2 race engines.

Laid carpets and done all sorts of tiling. Laid paving and done screening, landscape gardening.

The only thing I won't have a go at is plastering. I'll leave that to the professionals. I've put plaster boards up, but that's not the same.

Oh, and I can't mig weld for shit but I can Tig weld very nicely.

Many people say they cant DIY, but if shown how to do it the correct way, you'll be surprised what you can actually do yourself.

None of it is rocket science.

Except rocket science of course, but I'd even give that a go if pushed.

Like several here can't plaster but have installed bathrooms, network cableing, built a home cinema.

As I have a bias toward the BDSM side of sex have also made floggers, spanking benches, harnesses, spreader bars, plus adapted some very innocent items into machines of ecstasy & torture depending on your point of view

Can do just about anything, did everything joinery, wiring, plumbing, plastering ect when renovating my own house only thing I didn’t do was the gas fitting pretty sure it’s not much different to soldering plumbing pipes but didn’t want to take the risk. My main work is paving but we do build the odd extension too

A good 8/10

I've learnt to do a hell of a lot of work over the years inside and outside of the houses I've had.

The only things I don't like or trust myself with are electric hedge cutters doing my arch above my head and huge drills 🤣🤣

I'm pretty good with mechanics, although I learnt on older cars: VW's, minis and the usual boy racer hatchbacks. I've swapped engines, stripped them for reconditioning and can arc weld, not very pretty but solid and passed MOTs.

Plumbing I'm ok, I can do copper pipe work and solder a joint. I've done plastic pipe fusion stuff more on the gas network side than water. Leak testing, drop testing etc.

Electrics I can do most domestic jobs, wire lights, switches, sockets, cookers probably do a consumer unit. I can fix quite a few appliances. Washers, dryers, fridges, computers.

Carpentry, I can hang a door, built cabinets for camper vans, ply lining, do a few joints. I've fitted a kitchen and windows.

I can't wallpaper, tile or plaster for shit or gardening beyond ripping out stumps or burning things - I can build a fire in a storm. Anything that involves finishing or looking pretty - I tend to be crap at. Making something that's broken work again, I tend to be good at.

Actually, that's bollocks. 7/10. I ripped out the 1970's tiled fire surround, cleaned and repointed the victorian bricks, and now it looks beautiful.

East of Eden, West of Hell

Dunno. I don't do much.

I used to be OK at flat pack stuff. When I moved in to my flat, I built the chests of drawers for the bedroom, put the massive wardrobes together with the help of my Dad. I painted the walls.

It all needs doing again. I CBA. I did get a mate to start doing it, but lockdown hit and he ran out of paint, so it ground to a halt. It never restarted.

If I had the drive, I'd give things a crack, if I needed to. But probably better to just get someone trained in to do it.
