I was having a discussion about heresy. Assume the Bible is the word of God. If there are heresies set at or around the Council of Nicea - to what extent is that affected by the politics at the time? We know that there were multiple strands of theology stamped out during the period for political reasons.

How can we possibly get to what the word of God is or might have been, let alone what overarching themes are - if there's been so much interference over the millennia?
