Level of commitment. Most people would assume a partner to be exclusive whereas a FWB is only yours when their at yours

Good point. If you do things like go on outings and have sex. Why would they be friends love but not romantic love

For me a FWB is someone you have sex with and you’re friends with. It’s just casual.

A lot more feelings and emotions are involved with a partner.

Carlisle usually

The line can get a bit blurred with a really good FWB.

I know I occasionally find myself counting my best friend as a partner. Though there's absolutely no romantic feeling there. All of the awesome friendship and good sex, but not that same deeper feeling I get with my actual partners.

It's real fucking close though.

My personal experience

A FWB is someone I’m friends with that I have as a sexual partner too. This includes hanging out socially by going to a restaurant or an art gallery. Our personal lives are separate. We don’t live together and we’re not a couple. We both have the right to see other people.

A partner is someone who I’m dating and there’s the possibility of it going further. This may include living together, marriage and having a family.

I have had one FWB become a partner and it didn’t end well. Sexually we were attracted to each other and we enjoyed hanging out but we just weren’t compatible for anything more than that.

You aren't in a relationship with a fwb, it's not a romantic thing.

I've had a fwb for a year and counting, if she was a partner we would argue way more 😂

For me the determining factor would be the commitment side of the love triangle.

There can be comparable levels of passion and intimacy with a friend, but the level of involvement in each others lives is likely to be lower.

"One indicates the love of a friend, the other a long term romantic love Good point. If you do things like go on outings and have sex. Why would they be friends love but not romantic love"

Because sex doesn’t have to involve those feelings. You can enjoy someone’s company, care about them deeply as a friend and still not feel romantic love for them which would be taking a step towards building a life together.

Im not even talking monogamy here but a partner is someone you do more than just hang out (and occasionally fuck). You’re actively merging your lives in whatever way your relationship fits together, and your consideration for them and their feelings on any given situation is much more present.

Indeed you can also have great sex without being good friends too

I’m probably not explaining myself very well here

Not for me it isn't. An FWB has never been "just a shag", but a friend who I care for.

I don't think of a partner as a *long term* romantic love thing. Because I'll use partner in place of boyfriend and girlfriend - they might not necessarily be more than a few months old.

But partner does suggest reciprocated romantic love. A fwb friendship doesn't have that in my mind. I'd go on dates with my "partners" but I wouldn't with a fwb. I'd still enjoy spending time with them both, socially.

Ah you're asking the wrong person here! It takes me some time to fall in love with someone and it doesn't grow if I doubt it... I've never entertained the thought of it with a fwb.

What's the difference between partner stuff and fwb stuff? I'm not a big fan of the relationship escalator.

Could be sharing finances, could be laundry (), could be being introduced as such to family members.

I use the term partner to describe a relationship type. It’s different to fwb. I wouldn’t describe an fwb as a partner to them or to anyone else. I rarely use gendered terms like bf or gf. And I never use them seriously, only in jest.

yeah there

A partner is way different to a fwb. Fwb is mutual convenience however good the friendship is and even if the sexual side wanes the friendship can/could continue. A relationship and partner is deeper entwined and you do not want to think of them not ever being involved in your life in all capacities. All imho of course.

Tonypandy.

Commitment is how I differentiate.

I had a FWB with whom I had a wonderful friendship. Socialised together, went on holidays, shared joint fab profile and I had a key to his place.

But we were our own people with our own lives that were totally independent of each other. Yes we had some mutual fab friends, but outside that we didn't share each others lives.
