If you go to The No10 website there is a list of past prime ministers and the major act they put through parliament.

Clement Attlee is credited with..The NHS Act, The National Insurance Act ,The Coal Industries Act ,The Electricity Act, The Transport Act, The Planning Act, The Children's Act, The Nurseries Act, and The National Parks Act

These are acts that are deemed to be major acts.

Margaret Thatcher's list on the official government website reads thus..The Housing Act....That's it.

So a question.

Who was the greatest peacetime Prime Minister of the 20th Century?

Tra-mar, a clever and incendiary loaded question.

I have deliberately stayed out of any thread conerning Thatcher. My friends are fully aware of my views of her and I see no need to make any comment about her now or in the future.

Your thread, though cleverly worded is like asking who's the greatest Football manager between Paisley & Fergie. It's the type of question that simply raises passionate argument and no-one backs down. As has been seen through countless threads on here and elsewhere some people believe that Thatcher was the best PM ever while a good quantity of others passionately disagree with that statement.

Personally, I'll continue to avoid the news as far as possible and wait for the end of next week when her name is truely consigned to history.

That may be the case, and I wasn't critising you, more complimenting you on what you asked. However, sticking to my keeping out of these threads, thats my last comment on the subject....

One of them became Prime Minister at the end of the Second World War in 1945.

The country required great reform. There were many acts needed.

The other wasn't.

No comparison.

Attlee without doubt....but please explain how Thatcher kept us out of Europe....whilst remaining as part of the EU?

Do you mean the Euro?

If so she wasn't the only one was she?

Also Attlee as Deputy PM oversaw the 1944 Education Act. Something that really did change a huge amount of people's lives forever.

He took this country into an illegal war through his lies, paying no regard to parliament or democarcy and killing thousands of innocent civilians

A 'legal war' is defined as military action that is passed unanimously by the UN Security Council.....name me one war that has been passed as so since the UNSC was formed after World War 2?

More her apparent influence on the EEC and the Single European Act and what appeared to be an opposition to the creation of a Europe as a super state and the loss of sovereignty. Opposition to Euro was probably more to do with Major.

Not a supporter of Thatcher in any way but I do appreciate the influence that she had on Europe and our position in it ... maybe I should have written 'keeping us out of Europe' differently
