I'd love to be a minimalist! I have the drawer(s) of shame in the kitchen, filled to brim with paperwork I really need to chuck out. I'm not too bad with keeping stuff in general though. But it does seem to creep up on me...

My ex was awful for keeping everything! 'oh, I'm sure that bit of spare washing line will come in handy?!'.

So, are you a keep that for a rainy day person, or a chuck it away to avoid clutter kinda soul?

Of the two, a hoarder. I have a lot of stuff, my flat has stuff packed in to every piece of available space. But I am planning on a bit of a clearance.

Every so often I'm reminded of the photograph I took of the flat the day I moved in and I miss it looking that spacious!

I used to keep everything "just in case" and collected anything I liked. Since January though I have been systematically routing through the house getting rid of things. Only yesterday the fish tank finally went and I've sorted my mum garage out (she let's me store my selling things) so come Tuesday there will be a case of stuff and a couple of shopping/bin bags to go off. Then I'll start listing again. After a month (1 Oct latest) anything not sold will be going to charity too. I have way too much stuff. I can see improvement in my home and that's spurred me on to get rid of more. If one thing comes in then 3 things go out.

I've kinda hit a point in life where I want a homely home but not full of clutter, I want things I've collected that mean something in display but not keen crap that I've not touched for years (apart from stuff from my childhood and kids things, they are all in the loft), so my rule of thumb now is, if I haven't touched it in six months, it gets donated.

Anything in my kitchen that we haven't used, that goes too.

I'm a complete minimalist except when it comes to money in the bank and music which I horde. Regarding the latter I have 1000's of vinyl records and cd's and even still have cassette tapes, all geekishly stored A-Z too!

I’m a hoarder in certain areas of the house… I have a kitchen cupboard and a portion of the wardrobe in the spare room that is absolutely packed with stuff. But my living room, master bedroom and bathroom are kept clutter free and spotless. I wouldn’t be able to relax in a cluttered space.

Somewhere in between. I don't keep stuff because I have an unhealthy emotional attachment to it, or a "just in case" mindset, but because I'm simply too lazy to clear unneeded items out of my house. I've got to wait for that special annual wave of motivation to ride. I'm currently mid-declutter.

I blame genetics tho as I'm totally templated on my mum and maternal grandparents

As I've become older, I'm less attached to things but find it easier to get rid of things if I know it will get re-used. If the only place for it is landfill then I'm inclined to hold on to it for 'just in case it can be of use' moments I imagine might arise. It's very annoying.

I did removals throughout lockdown and saw extremes of both. The minimalists don't really seem to spend time in their own homes. They're just places to sleep and entertain. It's all VERY OCD

The hoarders on the other hand have mental health issues that are detrimental to the health of everyone involved.

Of the two I obviously preferred the minimalists as they didn't have much stuff to move around and I didn't need a hazmat suit. LOL

Though I do squee a bit when I see a minimalist design in a magazine.

Eg, white lounge, carpet, walls, recessed TV with chased wires, settee and that's it. No pictures, ornaments, clutter, nothing. I imagine that would bring a zen-like sense of quietness and meditation.

I have boxes of wires and electrical bits and pieces that I know if I throw out I will the next day find the bit of equipment that needs them floppy discs, floppy disc drives, zip discs, phone connectors allowing use of phone and modem [who needs this with super fast fibre, plus no landlines, so why do I have four handsets])

Good example from today of why you should keep things:

I was putting stuff in the paper recycling bin just now and realised that was I about to throw away a nice card from years ago saying that I had missed the Channel 5 retuners when they called to adjust the output frequency of my VCR.

How could one not keep something of such unique historical value?

It has now gone in the filing box with threatening letters from TV Licensing.
