It was before we could use any emojis that only certain ones were allowed so if you used another it came up as amp

It means that some people haven’t bothered to look at, or update their profiles for some time.

The site software sometimes corrects the '&' symbol to 'amp'. Basically it means 'and'.

Apparently when children were reciting the alphabet years ago they ended with 'and per se & (and)' which sounded like 'ampersand' when said quickly, hence the name

Many people if asked to draw an ampersand would do a @ which is disappointingly just called an at sign.
