Self scan checkouts

Apparently Morrisons are cutting the number of self service checkouts and it’s elicited some very strong opinions on either side.

Me? I’m pro self scan, I’m trying to get through the errands of my day with as little human interaction as possible.

I pick my shopping, bag my shopping, so it's nice not to have to scan it, too.

Plus, it can be pleasant to chat to the checkout staff. I find in interesting asking them what boxset they're watching

I use self scan to shop, packing my shopping as I shop. At the end you use the self serve to scan in your purchases and pay.

I find it less of a maul, lifting goods onto the checkout belt, then trying to pack as the stuff whizzes back at you at the other end, other shoppers in the queue fidgeting if you don't pack quick enough, or the cashier dates to engage you in conversation resulting in the queue having to wait life changing wasted seconds.

They do away with jobs. Most are also card only with the aim of getting rid of csh.

I use them as sometimes it's the only option, it's also useful when you are on a budget and you can see for yourself if you are near the end of the money lol.

I do like the scan guns so I can do it myself and use the above for budget purposes

I like them but a lot are poorly designed for wheelchair users. You can't get your knees under the scanner, often can't reach the touchscreen and/or card machine and some are an absolute nightmare ordeal.

Local Tesco you have to hang about waiting for a member of staff so you can ask for a carrier bag. They'll begrudgingly hand one over like it's the soul of their newborn child, and then stand watching to ensure you scan it for the 30p price... I've seen people in there stuffing items in their pockets, and down their trousers. Could be shoplifters. Could just not want the hassle of asking for a bag 🤔

I really dislike self scan, mainly because it feels like a massive cost saving exercise where the customer is asked to do the staffs job and wait for one stressed and anxious staff member to notice that the child lock on your bottle of wine/razor/anything sharp requires attention. And then the inevitable unexpected item…

No. Self scan are an infernal thing and I’d rather smile vaguely at an actual human than deal with exacting Skynet

I mostly use Lidl as it’s closest they took the self scan out several years ago due to scrotes pinching. Would probably use them if they were there depending on who was on the till a few of the younger ones working there are done of the most miserable bastards I ever seen and would prefer never to deal with them again

My local Morrisons is like Hell on earth. I can't self scan as I've usually got alcohol or Monster or both (it's always both) so I need human approval. My Morrisons is a living Hell. The checkout staff are having phone conversations with friends using hands free devices and the security guard is constantly stating into his phone. The shelf stickers block the aisles so you can't get by and pretty much everything that is not canned goes off that day or the next (wayyy too many expired products on the shelves aswell)

So I've decided to by my essentials from M&S which are pretty much the same price. Just got to avoid those impulse buys on prepared food.

I'd prefer local jobs to remain, rather than tech taking them. I prefer quick checking out, which ideally means more people employed. As a hypocrite, I do occasionally use the machines, if I can't face engaging with someone

I work in retail during the day, and have to scan stuff for customers. The last thing I want to do is scan my own food to save a big company money.

I always make a point of going to a checkout that’s staffed, after all it’s a job for someone.

The times that I’ve had to use a self checkout, they have either gone wrong, I’ve had to wait for “verification” or it’s took longer to do than walking to a till with a person on it.

As far as I’m concerned, they can get rid of the lot into room 101 😂

I use neither. Been ordering online for home delivery since Covid first appeared.

I can do my shopping in a few mins, and there is no browsing/temptation for stuff I don't need either. Amazon for everything else, and a couple of specialist e-tailers for harder to source items. I've not shopped in a high st or out of town retail park since 2020, and I have no plans on ever returning.

So i am just comong to the end of a seasonal job working supermarket checkouts. Primarily main checkouts, but am also trained ti help with self scan. And here is my opinion from both sides.

As a shopper, I dont mind self scan if i am getting a few items. And want to go through quickly. Often use them at my local co op etc as they are quicker. Especially if i have no challage 25 items (pain meds alcohol etc). I dont like putting a big shop through self scan. I to like scan and shop for a big shop as its very good for budget control. This is my opinion from before working in a supermarket and hasnt changed since.

What I've learnt about them since working there is a few things. It increases shops losses as people will, sometimes think there card has gone through and just walk away as theu dont want a receipt anyway not realising it hasn't. Not to mention it kind on makes shop lifting easier. Also some people should not be allowed anywhere near them as they have no commonsense or understanding of basic technology.

Working the self scan its the big shop ones that i find are more troublesome and personally think morrisons should move to scan and shop system for them instead. (I dont know if any do, but the 2 near me dont.)

Although i will say i am a socail person and love chatting which is why i like both gping through checkouts and workong on them.

Think self scan has its place, but shouldnt be the only option. And they should also be card and cash options available.

They do have a track record of naming really back strategic decisions in the last few years, but maybe they got this U-turn right.

They are talking about full trolley self scan only and I don’t like that personally, it’s too much, I think they made a huge mistake and it drive customers away , not only dod sales drop in 2023, They laid off 8,800 & have over £1bn-losses through something really bad decisions on debt financing

They should stick to online and basket self scanning and get a new CEO

I have found moat self checkouts on have 1 or 2 for cash, so there is usually a queue for the cash only one. I use cash mainly now, not card.

If I'm getting a few bits, then I use self checkout. For my big shop I use a cashier.

The local Tesco has more self checkouts and the other day most self checkouts were closed and the staff was standing doing nothing. The queue for a cashier was maybe 3 in each.

Think Tescos need to rethink and bring back the cashier checkouts.

And it's easy for people to shop lift on self checkouts.

I have never used an unmanned checkout and doubt that I ever will.

On a busy day my local Morrisons will have 3 staff just dealing the those people who screw up whilst trying to use unmanned tills.

More manned tills would be better especially if they reintroduced the 10 item manned ones

As an aside I have had more meets chatting to people using the manned tills than I have ever had on Fab
